Worth Fixing?
Sunday, July 31, 2005 11:19 PM
I've had some time to think, and I'm kind of debating what I should do..

My 93 wagon is going though that I need new parts phase. Though its life
it has been a dependable car (bought it from the folks) It's rusty, but still in solid
shape body wise.

It has a lot of miles (131k on/3.1), and it is starting to have little issues..
The reason I'm even considering it is because my job will be farther away,
so it really has to be dependable.(I live close to work now) I have my other Cav
(04) but it might end up a project car.. which means this beater will get some
miles...

Your thoughts? Should I put money into it, or should it be time for a another car?

I'm proably looking at a few new sensors at the moment..though I think it might
need a little more...

If I do keep it, with the milage, is there anything I should do (else)?

recent list :

Fuel pump
Plugs,wires
Battery
Major fuel system cleaning.
trans flush

ive seen well maintained 2.8/3.1l last 400k km (250k miles) no problem. the motor i pulled from my car had 400k km on it, still ran great, and ive seen a lot of others that high as well. if you have kept up on matinance, then dont consider 131k miles to be high, it should easily go another 100k.

with that in mind, if the major components are in good shape (motor, trans) and the rust isnt to bad, then i would keep it going, just feed it some parts. keep in mind that its paid for, and say you have to throw $500 into it to get it back to top running shape, you arent gonna find another "driver" thats in top running shape for $500.

a big thing here to consider though is the rust. how bad is it??? is it just surface rust, or are parts of the car falling off??? were is the rust mainly??? if your doors or fenders are rusting, pick up parts from the wrecker. wagon and sedan stuff can go cheap cause there are more in the yards than on the road. if its quarter pannels rusting out, they are more involved to change however not impossible.

Hmm..the miles aren't too big of a thing..I just don't want it to blow up on me..

The trans is in pretty good shape for the high miles (still shifts well).
The motor is in pretty good shape, maybe burns about 1/4 of a quart (tops)
between oil changes.

That being said, I was told to up the changes to 2000 to 2500 miles to keep the
engine running smoothly.

I've been watching the oil pressure (which stays high during driving, dips to halway
at idle) been told this was normal for high miles car...

Rust? Nothing is falling off yet, got patches of rust on the hood and hatch.
I'm going to try to put something on it to keep then from rusting away..

also around doors, bottom panels are starting to get bad though....

All I can hope for is a car that can last for a few more years.....all I need is
air and a radio, and I'm a happy camper...
