Hey guys. I'm curious as to what displacement engines and what hp were these engines rated at that came in the 2nd gen phase 1 and phase 2 cavaliers. Their is a big debate at the local race track that some of them had 2.0L engines (which are allowed) and some of them had 2.2L engines(which are not allowed). I only care about the 4 cyl models. What I really need to know is what size engine came in what year cavalier, with respect to 2nd gen 4cyl cavaliers, and what hp were these engines rated at. Thanks.
I think if you look through the FAQ you would find your answer but I'll be nice and give it to you:
88-90 2nd Gen Phase 1
1988-89: 2.0L 90HP / 109TQ
1990: 2.2L 95HP / 120TQ
91-94 2nd Gen Phase 2
1991: 2.2L 95HP / 120TQ
1992-93: 2.2L 110HP / 130 TQ
1994: 2.2L 120HP / 140 TQ
So why is the 2.2L engine not allowed considering it came in most years of the 2nd gen?

I'm curious also. Is this just a displacement limit? The additional 5 hp of the pre 1992 tbi 2.2 isn't a "make or break" factor. If the extra torque is an issue, would a weight penalty be in order?

He asked for Cavaliers... 2.0Ls only came in sunbirds after 89.
exactly, thanks for the back up Wraith

oh woops.....my bad. but you dont know what your talking about......I have a 2.0 turbo in my 88
ahhh so this is the reason why my 4dr is so gutlas
1990: 2.2L 95HP / 120TQ

Thanks a bunch guys. I did look through the FAQ but couldn't find it (sometimes i'm as blind as a bat). Anyways, this is all I need. Should settle the debate.
Well as for the race track, they only allow motor up to 2.0L in domestics and up to 1.5L in imports.
FWIW, I'd ask for a review of those rules. For example, the 1.9L DOHC Saturn engine (124 hp 122 ft/lbs ) will kick the pants off a 2.2L TBI OHV engine and probably many of the 8V import engines. Wouldn't the displacement limit be better based on 2 valve / cylinder versus 4 valve / cylinder heads?
Or you can keep quiet and head out to find a 1.9L DOHC engine.
Have fun.

figure out some way to de-stroke a w41 quad 4, or figure some way to get a 2.0l ecotec into it.
what are the rules you have to run??? does it have to be the same size/type motor that came in the car??? how are the rules regarding engine swaps???

Has anyone ever attempted/succeeded to put one of those into a J-body? I know that for not much $$ you can make those engines put out more than the head cheerleader behind the bleachers
And I'm quite sure I can find one (or more) in my local yard.
They throw out head cheerleaders there??? Crazy... they make good waitresses when they get older.

Man I gotta go to the junkyard..
2.0 in second gen sunbirds is 110hp stock (threw that out there just for the heck of it)
I need to find a dyno.
