Hi all. Well it is looking like I am going to get money for xmas for a 2.0 ro put in my 1.8 turbo sunbird hatch!! Luckily this comes about the same time as tax time so i should have enough to get everything i need. I know that I need the ECM and wiring harness. I am going to get aftermarket wrist pins and head studs, and hoping to find a layered steel head gasket so i can avoid having to oring the block. Ill likley get new rings and hone the cylinders as well. What i need to lmpw os will i need a guage cluster from the 2.0T car? Or will my 84' 1.8T hatch one plug in and work alright? Lastly, i have a 3spd in my hatch, I know it should bolt up to the 2.0 but will it handle it alright?? Alsowill the 2.0T ecm work with it, as far as i know 2.0's only came 4spd or 5spd manual. I am assuming that the ecm in the obd cars doesnt have anything to do with the tranny like the obd2 cars does. So basically i need to know if i will need to swap in a 4spd auto or a 5spd manual as well or if my 3spd will be ok. In the long run I am planning the Grand Prix turbo install as well as full 3" exhaust and likely some dsm injectors, the fiero v6 TB and a boost increase
Any help is appreciated thanks.

the 2.0l turbo only came with a 3 speed auto or a 5 speed getrag 282. the 3 speed auto is in fact, the same 3 speed used behind the 1.8l turbo. you will need to get the wiring harness and ecm from an automatic car. the 2.0l harness should plug right into your dash harness without an issue, and that means your current gauge cluster will work just fine.
as for building the motor, i would get new rings and bearings. you need to replace the rod bolts as they are torque to yeild, so try to get some erp bolts. as for headstuds, the only option is to have the block drilled for arp 1/2" studs. cometic makes an mls headgasket, just make sure you coat it in copper spray sealant.
You don't have to replace the entire harness. You could repin the old one or make a jumper harness to plug in the 7749.

When did the fully electric speedo show up? Prolly want to avoid getting a harness from those cars. I know my 89 has no speedo cable.

Thanks guys, i had thought the 2.0 came with a 4spd, good thing it was the 3spd. Would a tranny cooler be agod idea?? Or does the 3spd hold up pretty well, my car has 125k on it.

the 3spd isnt to bad. they are common for lockup solonoid failures, id recomend that when you are doing your swap that you change it. all you gotta do is pull the side cover off and its on the valve body. a tranny cooler is a good idea. if you can keep the heat down, it will deffinitly help it last longer.
the fully electronic speedo came in in 89, however he can use the cable/electric speedo on his old transmission, as all speedo signals on gear driven type speedos (used pre 92) all give the same signal.
So as long as i get the harness and ecm from a pre 89 i should be alright. I already know all about the lockup solenoid failure, mines unplugged
Ill likely replace it then. Thnaks guys, looks like im gonna have more than enough money to do most of it all of it i cant wait!! One more thing, what turbo is on the grand prix turbos?? I want to get one, but id rather go with a rebuilt or new instead of a junkyard turbo, is it a T28??

it is a t25, same as whats on the 2.0l turbo, but its larger. it will bolt right on aswell. it does work well, but there are better turbos out there. i would go for a gt25 or gt28 down the road, ballbearing turbos kick ass
