"Iron Duke" question
Tuesday, March 29, 2005 12:29 PM
As most of you know, before I wanted to swap a 2.8L V6 into my Firenza, but since my engine(1.8L OHV) onlt has 121000kms on it I kinda want to modiy it a bit. I was told by a friend that the newer version of the Iron Duke is the same as my 1.8L except with a larger bore. I was wondering if the performance parts for the Iron Duke would work on my engine? Both are OHV, but that is all I know. Thanks for any help.

Sorry... about the only thing they have in common are ohv and made by GM.

Ever consider putting the Duke into your Olds, instead of the V6's? This engine has about the same amount of speed parts as a small block Chevy. Whatever you can think of, its been made. This is the most and longest modded 4 cylinder in US.

Heavy use for IMSA.. Sprint... Modifieds...... man they have these things cranking out 700-800 HP " UNBLOWN" ! Some turbo setups are over 1000 HP................

Actually it's half of a SBC

Never could figure out why more people didn't use this setup. Nice and light, good suspension weight distrubition and handling. Best kept secret around.

But can it be carbed? How hard would it be to drop into my Olds? I do not want something killer fast but quick. Thanks for any help.

GM " N " bodies used this setup. Pontiac Grand Am's...Olda Calais...Buick Skylark/Somerset's......sticks used the 5 speed.

Like I said, whatever your desires are... they made it!

Aluminum 2bbl's... 4bbl's...Hilborn injection... Kinsler injection... Webers...stroker kits...destroker kits...forged cranks..super duty blocks...aluminum heads in about a zillion styles...cams..r/rockers...rods in various lengths.... blah,,blah

i would put my quad 4 powered cars up against any iron duke, any day of the week. if you want a GM 4 cylinder, you may as well be working with the one that made the most power of any GM 4banger in N/A form.

the duke is half of a 305, yes. good engine, iron head, gear driven valvetrain, short stroke, however i'd lay odds that the 1.8 has a chance of running a stock 2.5 out of the park. it's the measley 8:1 compression that brought it's horsepower down to what... 105HP at the flywheel. weird story, i knew a 2.5 that still runs to this day (stock) and a tec 4 that killed itself at around 75,000 miles.
