Dyno Day

So I finally did it...

I put the sunbird on the dyno today. We tried a couple of runs. The 4th gear run (where you would normally expect it to happen with a final drive of 1:1) was taking waay too long so we did the run in third. The car sounded great right up until the end when it puffed a little bit of underhood smoke and a lot of exhaust smoke. Car was fine but I did not wind it up again.

Any guesses on Horsepower and Torque? I will post results in a little bit.

Paul has done some mods along the way on this one so I'll guess........

165Hp/160Tq

I'll Be the over and go with 175HP and 185 ft lb on torque. Double what my j-bodys produce. But hey mine were built for good looks and not power.....lol

180/170?

Off topic, but how do you keep that plastic nosecone so shiny? Do you treat it like the rest of the car when it comes to waxes and such?

You guys are giving me more credit than I am due

Hugh - I had the sun shining on it and pic overexposed a bit I just take care of it like the rest of the paint and mothers back to black the black trim.

Keep in mind this is 1.8 which is 150/150 at the crank from the factory. The dynos capture at the drive wheels which reflect a 15% parasitic power loss for manuals and a 20% parasitic power loss for autos. Then there is a minor SAE adjustment for altitude also. I was expecting better than 150 x .85 = 127.5 HP which would be the standard calculation. I have mild tune, injector, airbox, and exhaust mods.

My actual results were 127.78 HP and 124.26 TQ in the first run. The Sunbird seems to perform much better when heat soaked so I think I definitely left some power on the table. I did not do a second run after the puff of smoke. One of the onlookers was saying it looked like my driver side wheel was curling in under load so I may have a suspension issue to chase as well. Not as high as I would have hoped for but I have my baseline.

I will post the graph in a bit.

85% at the wheels calculates at 127.5 at the shaft - you were did on even after 31 years. I wish we all were still at 100% at our age...Hahaa!!

Paul I recommend either photo bucket or just start yourself a youtube page as I have!!! I think youtube if my preference because I want as many people to see my info on specific topics.Just for instance a video I did on my nephews 98 accord for the vss sensor is over 30,000 views and it has been up a year or more.I guess some of my video's do help as I did 2 on my wifes accord slow cranking and those have had significant views too.Not bragging just providing the most accurate info and making someone else not go thru the drama to fix or learn something quick instead of researching tons of site's.I can link my page or name if anyone would like to visit my page,IF requested.

Did you find the smoke cause yet?? Is that a 66-67 ChevyII on the lift behind you? Another old car of mine reminder. Very cool to watch!!!

Thanks for the support...

Cool cars on the lifts behind me too. Chevy II (Philip was right), then a road runner. There is an 86 Turbo Daytona way at the end too.

The smoke is not head gasket. I know there are cracks in the head between the intake and exhaust valves on one of the cylinders. I was told by the machine shop that this was pretty normal on these heads and it should not be a problem as they pressure tested within spec. I consulted with a couple of the turbo experts here and they seemed to think it wasn't that strange. Seems odd to me though - not done with this one. I thought the falloff in power about 5k was odd also so back to the books I go.

So now why do people do this and what do you learn from it?
Re: Dyno Day

The smoke didn't start till deceleration. Could it have come out the waste gate? Maybe you were pulling a little bit of oil past the rings on the deceleration at high RPM.

Hugh-

It measures Horsepower and Torque at the drive wheels. You usually do it on a stock car before modifications are made so you have an actual metric instead of just SOTP (Seat of the pants) feel. I have to post the graph I have - it has some interesting info.

Orlen - you are pretty much on to what Tony (2literturbo) and I were discussing - pulling oil past the rings once I let off the boost.
