After sitting all winter the check engine light on my 84 Sunbird 1.8L stays on all the time. Does anyone know how to check the engine codes? The car seems to run fine.
Thanks, did a google search earlier and could not find it anywhere.
They also sell an OBD 1 code reader at Advance Autoparts that hooks directly to the 12 pin diagnostic port under the dash.
Does the code reader just flash an LED, Josh, or does it read off the actual trouble code? Just Curious.

Well found out it was just the TPS solenoid, I reset the connection and it seemed to resolve the problem. After I took off my air cleaner I was digging around near the carburetor and found this vacuum hose with a bolt stuck in the end. Must have taken the air cleaner off a dozen times and never noticed. It looks like it goes to the air cleaner but I don't understand why someone would do this and what it would accomplish.

Gotta love the "mystery fix" from a previous owner...
My dad did something years ago with his 1978 Cutlass Salon where he removed 2 vacuum lines and shoved golf tees in the end so they wouldn't do what they were there for.
If he's lucid enough to remember why, I'll try asking him the next time I see him.
Orlen I will look at the package next time I work there. I thought it was an actual code reader. I have my own scan tool I bought from Matco tools. You can pull codes and watch data just like the modern cars. I believe GM was one of the first manufacturers to use a data link on there vehicles.
Hadn't forgot about you Brian - was on my "To Do" list!!

I suspected this was the case, but wanted to check to be sure. It is the vacuum supply to the Heat Stove control solenoid. Second hose goes up on top to the butterfly valve. Shouldn't bother you leaving it plugged off as it is, but I'm betting you want it stock on such a pretty show car.
