4 speed auto swap

I currently have a 3 speed auto in my Z and I was wondering if anyone would know what I would need/ modify to swap it over to a 4 speed.

Just some first hand experience with a 4 speed. The ole' lady has a 3rd gen 2200/4spd and is just a slush bucket, you have to really want the car to kick out of 4th into 3rd and that necessitates dropping out of lockup. It tends to stay in 4th & lockup on the highway and power just isn't there for pulling hills.

I remember reading some of the 3rd gens still had the 3spd, so I'm guessing no 1st or 2nd gens came with it. Come to think of it, I believe 3rd gens dropped the V-6 for the Quad 4, so I'm not sure if GM fitted the 4spd to the V-6's, hopefully someone betterin formed than I can hop in here to confirm.

Anyways I much more enjoy the 3 speed in the old 1st gens - I have the TCC unplugged and it makes for easier going here in the Virginia mountains with the 2.0. Of course your experience might be different with the V-6.
Mods.... surely, you'll be looking at a complete wiring / computer swap - probably would be some differences involved the ignition and I'd think vehicles with the 4spd would probably have ODBII where 1st get would be ODBI .

Wish you luck with your adventure, my friend!!

You might find some handy info in the V6Z24 Forums. Fill us in as you go there n' do that!!

Oh yeah, one other aggravation about that darn 4 spd. It doesn't have a @&*% dipstick!! Ours has a small leak on the pass. side drive shaft and there is no way to check the fluid level. Grrrrr...

You can barely see the ole' ladys red 3rd gen "hiding" behind my Pontiac in my sig...LoL

You can use any 4 speed that bolts to a GM OHV engine but if its an electronic controlled on you will have to swap the wiring and ecu/bcm from front of the car to the back. There is one 4 speed that was in I believe a Beretta that was not computer controlled. Look on v6z24.com, I think only one person did the swap. If you do that swap you will most likely need a custom trans mount and custom cv axles.

I'm wanting to stay pre-obd II I heard some of the older W bodies had 4 speed trans available. I also thought there were some later 2nd gens that had an optional 4 speed. I mainly want it because it feels tapped out on the highway with only 3 gears.

I'd like to do this to mine as well. A quick search of V6z24 forums shows quite a few pondered swapping to the 4spd auto but none or few have actually done it.

I don't understand why GM didn't offer 4spd auto's as an option on Jbodies, they had them in pretty much every other vehicle line at the same time.

Also Wikipedia claims "non-electronic versions of these transmissions does not exist"

If this is true, it looks like you'll need to replace the wiring harness.

check out Pennock's fiero forum. Look for the 7730 swap .I think it's a posting in the "construction zone". Sinister Perfomance discusses this swap in that post. Go to their website at GM TUNERS.

You need to find the beretta or what ever car it was that came with the Non electrical tranny. There was one swap like I said on v6z24.com

or you could try to find a stand alone controller or use a megasquirt. Could also do an engine swap and tranny swap from a newer 660 and swap the entire wiring harness and just wire in your gauges. If you have a digidash you could probably just wire them in.

From some of the research I have done it seems a mid 80's A body would work the best. Their chassis seem to be closest to a J body.
