Today's score and resulting question...
Wednesday, May 30, 2012 7:00 PM
Was very excited today to get an '87 Rear Spoiler to put on my '86 Z24. Less than $22.00 with tax from U Pull R Parts. Did notice however that the under side of the trunk on my car is different and lacking the "cut-outs" where the mounting holes would go on the '87. Does anyone have ideas on mounting this without resorting to anything drastic (like my dremel)?

Thanks in advance!

more than likely a drill to drill holes for mounting... AND holes for access.

Idk aside from measuring to center it and use painters tape to mark around the bolt up area (or rather the whole part that touches the trunk).Once centered and marked with painters tape mark distance in that area between each hole and drill out.I would go new drill bits and use some cutting fluid helps to drill quicker and start small on the bit and work up to size. How are the seals that were on it?If shotty i would use some self adhesive foam and even silicone on the bolt holes for leaks.Just some thoughts and def take your time.I guess if your really worried go back and just get the trunk lid and get some fresh paint put on it by a paint shop(will be cheap removed and install yourself) and reinstall spoiler and it will BE right the first time and no drilling.

Thanks Ron. Slow and steady will definately be the way to go with this. As for seals, there weren't any as the car this came from was a Z24 clone. This guy actually had blue gas station type paper towels folded underneath the spoiler to prevent it from rattling. If you think that's bad, you should have seen the huge top sided holes he drilled. Let's just say they were large enough to provide some "wiggle room" for adjustment purposes. First thing I will need to do is get the piece in somewhere and get it painted. Then I will use the painter's tape process to measure and grid the proper location. I'll reply on how this comes out and what methods I end up using.

Steve the above link should take you to a pic of the one i put on the sunbird .The spoiler had a black plastic base piece that i was able to center on the Trunk lid with painters tape under it the used an 1/8 inch bit to start the guide hole then i think 5/16 for the studs on the bottom of the spoiler .The center holes are no problem you will be able to get the hardware on the two on the outer ends are a bit tougher as they need to wide enough to get a socket on to tighten i drilled all the thru with the 1/inch bit then used a uni-bit to make the outer holes 1 inch without enlarging the top holes sealed the holes with 3m dum dum Black .no leaks and all looks good in my opinion.

I cheated with mine and bought the trunk lid with the spoiler on it. I like the fact that there were more holes so the seam could breathe - I had big time rust problems on my trunk lid without the spoiler. I am in MI so it comes with the territory.

Interesting bit I learned along the way, you need to adjust the tension on it so the lid will pop up properly with a key fob or remote switch.

BTW - K923, I love the red spolier on the red car, looks familiar I need to get my top looking as good as yours.
