Hey all, I have in the lasty few weeks made several posts here about my recenty acquired 1987 sunbird gt non turbo convertible. I bought it non running about 10 days ago. Finally my mechanic got it running. Needed a fuel pump w/ sending unit, and tune up. Just got it running today, so I am pleased about that. Motor sounds good and tranny shifts ok. I got this car from an original owner family-garaged in good shape. I do have a ?? The fuel gage is not working, even though the new fuel pump is working fine /w the new sending unit. Any suggestions on how to go about troublshooting the non working gas gage? It reads empty even though the tank is full. Any help how to fix this would be appreciated. thank you, Rob.

? here was the gauge registering before hand,or did u just not notice.Being the new parts unless the ground on the tank is not so solid, the gauge itself maybe bad, loose connection. You can pull the cluster pretty easy, but disconnect ur speedo cable on the trans first so it will alloy u to pull it forward!!!!!!!!!!.Could be once u remove it and check and DEF replace all the bulbs in the cluster while it is out. Then reinstall and see if it works, simply turn the key ON and see if the gas needle moves. If u had grounded the sending unit wire while the tank was down, and the hand went to FULL the gauge is OK,however if it was grounded and went to Empty or stayed there gauge is bad,or shorted,or poor connection.I am guessing try my suggestion and check the plug ins to the dash panel, and worst case u might just need another instrument cluster being I am not sure the fuel gauge side can be removed(I literally have not payed atten to that). Also replace all the dummy lights that would light up as well.Unless paul or scott or others who had pulled the cluster suggest better ideas.Ok

There is a black wire that runs along the drivers side rocker then shoots off under the drivers seat. you will have to pull the drivers seat to inspect where it is connected to the floor seat anchor rail. That wire is fuel related.

Rob-

Go on eBay and buy a GM Service Manual for your car. They are reasonably priced and are a weath of knowledge about our cars.

Sounds like a bad/no ground. If it was a G body I'd know exactly which wire to look for...there is a wire that plugs together near the rear license plate..maybe it just didn't get plugged back together.
