anyone know where to find something about painting laws?? ive looked all day and found only EPA stuff for shops.
i was told you're allowed to paint 1 car per year in your own home/property legally, in a residential neighborhood, but not sure if this is true or no longer valid, etc.
anyone have a site to find info on this, or what you have to do to be upto code?
thanks in advance
I just checked epa.gov and didnt see anything about painting your car on your property. I do know if you are to do body work/ paint on the street you can get a fine. But I doubt they'll give you any problems if you do it in your garage and if they do ask them do they pay your property taxes... Also If anything ask your local police dept on the rules and regulations.
thanks man...was thinking bout asking, but i dont need any un-needed attention, lol. they come by pretty often to see what im upto as it is, lol
I've got a few books on painting that I believe have some federal laws on painting in them. I'm pretty busy at work this week, but if I get some time I'll flip through them to see if I can find anything.
From this post I take it you did not find a place to paint the car... Where did you have it done last year?

i can see if my dad knows tomarrow since in our old shop he painted his trans-am 3 times lol
I think its against the law to paint a car without a booth.Even if you do it in your garage, they can give you a ticket. There pretty strict with these pollution laws.

If so I say just pick up a vent knock a hole in your garage and your good to go lol
I'm not sure if it's federal or state regulation, but I know here you cannot paint without the proper permits, zoning, you have to have arrangements for hazardous waste disposal, proper ventilation to prevent the release of hazardous chemicals into the air, etc... might even be something about being X amount of distance from a residential area.
When I could still to auto body/paint as a profession before my knee said "haha screw you!", I had gotten offered a job through a friend's friend who owned a shop. Problem was the landlady for an apartment building near where his shop was (ironically it was his mother) complained about his shop and his permit or whatever for the paint booth was revoked. He was fighting that for a while, and I eventually gave up waiting. His filtration system was awesome, none of the residents were complaining, just his mother/landlady (she was a vindictive biotch)
Checking with the local PD or municipal office would definitely be a good idea.
Tom - i had a place, but it fell thru so now im back to the drawing board. i really cant wait to much longer. if its not done in the next 2 weeks i may just wait til next year to bring it out, and ill go back to work and make it even crazier.
Nikki - ya, I assumed theres gotta be somekind of law or regulation against it....it just amazes me how many people paint multiple cars in their garages.....with makeshift paint booths.
ehhh, i hate cars, lol
a guy who lives two houses down from my parents paints cars and boats all the time, not sure what kind of permits hes got but its definatly a residental area, i mean its out of his garage
Probably all depends on your neighbors on what they say about it or complain about it would be my guess. A fan and some filters for it would probably work best. But definitely doesn't hurt to check into.
do it and pay the ticket FTW!!! lol
lol...but ive read could be upto $2500 or more. for that price i could have it airbrushed top to bottom and not need a booth, lol
lol... i got to find somethign for ya since you have helped me out so much so far..
I emailed nys epa i will let you know what i hear back for a responce...
hey eazy I found this poking around

im too lazy to click on that pdf but it looks like it will point you in the right direction. Worst comes to worst paint it late at night. nobody awake nobody knows.

werd...thanks buddy!
Nate, thanks for that link man, much appreciated!! and that was my thought. if i have to, ill just stealth it and paint after midnight......and my garage is on a back street, so i "should" be ok. no one asking me what all the fans are for, lol
interesting....after reading that, as far as i can tell, its not completely illegal to paint in your own garage....if you have a make-shift booth setup which i intend to do. if you filter air in and out to .05 grains per cubic foot of air, then you are ok. which they also say is easily achieveable by using filters.
the other part is alittle trickier, but disposal of solvents, excess paint, etc. if done correctly, then i shouldnt have any issues. i planned on multiple filters behind multiple fans exhausting the fumes, along with a filtered intake fan.
good news for me, lol
but i still think ill be spraying at night, just in case. dont want to take any unneccesary chances
thanks again guys

I not sure about that last part guess it really depends on the area you live in cause around jersey city. Seriously there's two or three body shops within a block of a school and residental building one being on the same block of the school about 30 feet away lol.
i know u are waiting on paint but i finally got a responce back and of couse it was useless

Hi Mr. Dunn,
You need to check with the requirements affecting this activity with your local authorities, like the office of the mayor in your town or city, the local office of the NY State Health Department, the local Fire Department, the local office of the NY State Department of Environmental Conservation, and find if any permit and/or approval is needed. US EPA does not regulate this activity, State and County authorities may do so.
Thanks for addressing us an inquiry on the web.

My uncle used tarps and fans w/ filters in a setup that he could park a car under and drop it down on, kind of like a batting cage in a gym. He painted out of his garage. Don't worry about doing your car for legal reasons. Take it slow. Do it Right.
Whats worse, a fine or a @!#$ty looking car?
Man that is crazy I cannot believe that you cannot paint your own car at your own garage. I would do it, just make sure your very well ventilated when you do it. If you keep it hidden and what not where no one knows that your doing it than it shouldn't be a problem I wouldn't think.
