Moving to NY in spring
Wednesday, January 24, 2007 6:44 AM
Hi guys! This coming spring my fiance and i will be leaving our home in NC and moving to NY for career purposes. I will be traveling all over the world but the place I will be working for and going to when I am not traveling is in NYC. so i was wondering if any of you can give me a heads up on where to live, where not to live, where to go, where not to go, etc etc etc *besides the culture shock* would be awesome! Thanks!!

living in nyc is going to be expensive. my buddy went to nyu and lived in the city and he was paying a ridicious amount of money for an apartment. i think he was paying something like 1600 for a 2 bedroom apt.

You COULD live in NJ, I have 3 friends living in Hoboken that work in NYC, and it's only a 20 or 30 minute trip into the city using the bus/path train. Apartments are expensive as hell anywhere you go out there, but they are cheaper in NJ than NYC. Good luck!

youll be in nyc you always run the risk of being to live in NYC you can live as far north as orange county. a one bedroom around here is going to be about 800 Id say. jersey is another option.

well it depends I know lots of people who live here by me and commute every day to the city. its about a 70 mile commute but at the indy car speeds of the thru way it doesnt take very long at all. you can take the train down from here too. i personally live 3 miles from work so i dont know much about the commutes.

Don't forget parking costs of living in the city....

I will dig up some info for you tonight(I have a ton of friends who either work in the city or live outside and commute in everyday.)

What job will you have? Sounds really exciting...

Does this mean you will be coming to the bash since youll be so close?

i would try long island the property taxes high. the closer to mahattan the property taxes are lower but every thing is real expensive. I would have to in ny find a safe place. the places i would stay away from Bronx, brooklyn, jamiaca. manahattan(too expensive)
People in NY are @$$holes they will say hi they will not want any thing to do with unless you came off the same boat as them.

yeah i was trying to stay away from the bronx, jamaica, queens, i heard there are parts of brooklyn thats actually pretty nice, but other parts to stay away from.... i just want to find a nice safe place for my fiance to live, with our two kitties, and a place where we done have to worry about our cars too much lol. i know beggars cant be choosers but i mean its just my safety standards and such. also at first, money will be an option but after i get established in my work it wont be (wow that sounded a lil stuck up )

you sound like you have no idea as to what you are talking about. any place in the damn country has bad areas and great areas. its not just NYC. everyone thinks you are gonna get shot the minute you step foot down here. and you are worried about someone not saying hello to you. this is the big city, where there are bigger things to worry about than shaking everyones hand on the block.

the Bronx aint that bad, and neither is Brooklyn or Queens. they do have areas that you should stay away from though. manhattan is hard unless you are getting paid really good or can fins some roomates. Staten island is a horrible commute imo, Long island is alright, but LIRR trains have a schedule, whereas the MTA just comes regularly for the most part.
