Matt, a harley would be horrible. He would be fixing it more than he would be riding it.

Well phil you might as well just check E-Bay or something. For the price range you are talking about you are basically going to end up on either a small displacement dirtbike or bike from the 70's or something like that.

What kind of bikes are you into?

If you are into sport bikes if you want something just dirt cheap pike up a
Kawasaki Ninja 250R
Image EBay = $730
or my better recomendation would be a Suzuki GS500F at least then you can enjoy it a little longer.
Image EBay = $1,025

If you are into cruisers your cheap options are:
Kawasaki Eliminator 125
Image EBay = $1,400
or for maybe a better resale option the Suzuki Boulevard S40
Image EBay = $1,625

Otherwise you need to be looking for a small displacement enduro/dirtbike that you can street legalize and just ride that around. Might be your best bet though based on the price you are looking for.

I hope this helps.

You are welcome Phil.

I personally think that if you want to invest in a bike that will last you either the full year or more than a year with you still being able to enjoy it plus have a better resale market the 500 CC class is what you should look at. Since the 500CCs are still twins they don't have the power to whip you to godly speeds like a 600 can but they still have enough power to back them up with fun riding around twisties and what not.

You can either go with the Suzuki GS500F or the other option that I did not mention was the Kawasaki Ninja 500R

Both are the same class bike. The Kawasaki doesn't have the full visual appeal in my opinion, it is slightly btter in performance though. Eitherway good luck with your purchase I'm sure you guys will have alot of fun with it. Be careful and if you have MSF classes near you take them because they are worth it.

I couldn't help but chuckle - there's a sportbike of some sort sitting on the side of 222, northbound just south of the Landis Valley overpass. Go leave you number and offer to take it off their hands

If you want something a in a 600cc, but don't want the hit in the wallet for insurance, you could always pick up a Suzuki Bandit 600. I picked mine up for 1700 last year thru ebay, and I pay about $220 a year for full coverage. Great bike to learn on, more of a dirt bike riding position than a supersport-style, same engine as the Katana and late 80's-early 90's GSX-R's, so parts are not too hard to come by. And it's not a full fairing bike, just has a fairing and windscreen on the front, and frame cover plastics under the seat, so you don't have to spend a lot time taking off plastic to do maintainence.

nope, I actually laid it down at ~45mph (on I-95, no less, and the other driver never stopped). I'm in the process of fixing to damage, which looked a lot worse than it was.

In my experience, a 500 is a great bike to start on, and you can get your money back out of it when you outgrow it. But you'll outgrow it fast, and even though a 600 isn't much bigger, there's a huge difference in power. I used to ride from Delaware to Aberdeen, MD for work and never had a problem keeping up with traffic on 95.

Oh, and 1 more thought. Whatever you buy, figure in the cost of gear. Helmet, gloves, leather boots, leather or textile type jacket. I know in De helmet use isn't mandatory once you have your license, but I'll always wear one. I rather have a $300 helmet destroyed than my face.
