Philly Jury Duty - Anyone?
Saturday, May 06, 2006 1:53 PM
Anyone ever have to serve in Philly? Experiences? My mom was called up over 5 years ago and ended up going every day for 6 weeks, it was a horrible experience.

I got my paperwork today for a two day/one trial, definately not happy about it. It Mapquested at over 80 miles in one direction. I work third shift & will have to take extra days off (use my vacation time!) to flip my hours to when they need me. I'm terrified of Philly traffic, especially center city at rush hour. This is really going to screw with me I got called up for my city court jury duty once a few years ago & it got cancelled the night before. Hopefully it'll happen again.

Thanks for the reply, but actually, you get paid $40 a day, you get paid per mile & you get paid parking if you mail in your stubs after you leave in the postage paid envelope they provide. My workplace also pays me the difference between the $40 and what my 40 hour week would pay, so I don't lose money. I talked to my mom about it yesterday and she corrected me that she went for 13 weeks, not 6. She also took the train & said that with the mileage that they paid her for, she made $15 a day even after paying for her train ticket.

I'm still under the understanding that I only get paid for the days that I'm actually there (I have to take extra days to flip my 3rd shift hours over) so I have to use vacation time to go from work. Also, still terrified of driving in center city at rush hour. I've never understood how to use public transportation since I've never had to use it by myself or at all even for a lot of years, so the thought of accidently getting on a subway or train going to the wrong place scares me even more than traffic.

The paperwork I have also says that there are magazines, books, games and some other stuff in the room where you sit, but you have to stay really quiet. I don't own a laptop, so I have no idea what I'll do. I keep thinking about how my mom never drank coffee until she had to go & started drinking it just to keep awake!

When you're being interviewed for jury selection, the correct answer to any and all questions is "GUILTY!"

You'll be dismissed pretty quickly
