Hello boys and gals,
Ive come here out of desperation, if you have seen my two other post then you may already understand what im talking about...
other post...
This is what was suggested so i figured id try...
I'll keep it brief and simple...apparently my water pump is on its last leg...GM quote was $1,512.27...im a college kid who just doesn’t have that kind of money... I know that some of you folks are very good with cars especially since you may have fixed this already...
So anyone willing to help with this...a possible arrangement for a monetary return could be made...just PM me
The car is drivable for now, getting it to a location shouldn’t be a problem..
If not its cool and then sorry for wasting bandwidth, just trying to not to go farther into debt.
Sincerely,
Jeff
That's your problem, you did a GM quote. Try a local garage or something, the price will be WAY less brother.
where about do you live jz? im in pittsburgh right now, but could be willing to make a drive next weekend, I have a decent set of tools, a haynes manual, and don't mind doing engine work

Did they break the quote down for you? $1500 sounds like way too much for a water pump, what else did they have on the estimate?
I just looked the labor time up on alldata and the cost of water pump, and it should be around $760-800, depending on the shops labor rate, which should be posted.
Where are located? I'm near PA and NJ, in Delaware, maybe we could work something out.

What motor is it? and year of the vehicle. from reading the post it is 95-99.
you have a 2.4. that quote is right. it takes about 8 hours to do the pump on a 2.4 since the pump is behind the motor and its hard to reach. search the 3rd gen forum and the maintance forum and you'll see what all is involved. its a very time consuming process
its a 2.4 LD9...and its a blk 1997 vert 102,200 miles
here is the exact #'s....
Hours 11.70 Labor 1146.60
LN Part number
4 GM 12482714 Pump kit = $147.64
5 GM 12360462 Gaskit KI = $56.97
6 GM 24576382 Gasket = $44.13
7 GM 12346290 coolant = $21.33
Parts= $270.07
Labor = $1,146.60
shop supplies= $10
Tax= $85.60
TOTAL: $1,512.27....
This is what is says...im in the Trenton area to all who are curious...

There charging over $100 bux and hour Holy chit batman! that is insane! Should be more like 30 - 40 buxs and hour. atleast that is what it is in my area. but benefit of living in the sticks to I guess. Or am I right that is outragously high? I don't even think my local dealerships charger over 50 bux and hour.
WTF is their labor rate????? I work at a GM Dealer and ours is $85 an hour. Using that as a base (I'm sure it may be a little higher in Trenton) it looks like they're trying to get you for 13.5 hours of labor. I assume your car has A/C, the standard rate is 7.5 hours, with 6.3 for the water pump plus 1.2 for the car having A/C.
A lift (which the dealer should have, the shop I work in has 4) makes working on the backside of the motor a breeze. I'll ask one of my co-workers (who used to work on the light duty side, now he works on the medium duty trucks) how much time a water pump on a 2.4 takes.

the comment made by the guy who was ..
"this is one hell of a job because the pump is not "external" like on most cars, we have to take apart the whole engine..."
they charged me $175 just to flush the tranny....the bill said labor was $89.50
(this was when and how i was informed about the water pump, today)
98 bucks an hour...holy highway robbery.
well, i wish you the best of luck in finding help, but unfortuantley, trenton is too far/expensive for a college student living in pittsburgh

the whole engine has to come apart comment is a bit misleading, did the guy who said it have a small oil can in his back pocket? Sounds like this is the kind of place that gets you car in for an oil change and then squirts oil on your shocks and tells you that the shocks need to be replaced. What exactly brought on the water pump being bad? Did you bring it in for an overheating problem or a coolant loss problem?

No...i did know about it being a possible problem, i asked for them to see if it was a hose or what the real deal was....while i was getting the tranny flushed....they also fixed 3 recalls...
o and thanks "mikec2003" the fact that you would be willing to help if it was closer is a nice gesture in and of itself
I would go to an independant shop, or another dealer if possible.
If I could get away with it, I'd offer my services at the shop I work at. I'm not sure if I could though. I just don't know if my boss would go for it, he's kinda funny about that kind of thing.

any place you go is gonna charge you atleast 600 bucks to replace that pump. like i said search the forums and see what all is involved. the timing chain has to be removed on the engine. its pretty much easier to pull the engine, replace the pump and then put the motor back in
damn here in RI you can buy your own parts, get your water pump changed and timing chain done for only $500 in labor.... god damn, id do my own water pump before paying over 1,000 in labor alone.. thats retarded

this useless post brought to you by the alcoholic known as LUNDiS
Little town of Canton PA. haha on average most shops are like 30 to 50 buxs and hour I do believe.
how far is canton from Trenton?...if so do you know of a place/ shop and how much they charge?
I would have to check around the shops your about 240 miles away from me. I would say I would help do it, cept don't have the garage space right now and havn't attempted to do that yet. I know eventually I probably will be
