Pittsburghers, I need help (moving advice)
Thursday, February 09, 2006 11:32 PM
Well, I'm going to be moving into the great city of Pittsburgh very soon (June/July), and I need some advice from everyone who lives down there:

I was looking at renting a place, but all of the places I see that are worth renting are $800-1000/month (Crawford Square, etc.). Plus, there's all of the strict rules and the likelihood that I'll get an @!#$ neighbor. So, I was thinking - why not buy a house? I mean, there are property taxes and insurance and whatnot, but after it's all said and done the total price would still have to be less than rent. My question then, is this: what parts of town are good for living, and which ones should I stay away from? I know about Wilkinsburg and Homewood and such, but are there other communities I should steer clear of? I have to stay somewhat near Oakland because of school (10 minute drive at most), so I was thinking Mt. Oliver, Mt. Washington, somewhere in that area. So, if anyone could give me some advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all

stay away from mt. oliver if possible. i lived there in allentown, and its not nice. we had 2 murders in the house next to us in the same night, but 2 seperate incidents.

although you can get away with anything there, lol

Glassport - definitely not. my buddy's sister used to own a car lot in Glassport, and i could tell you some stories that you probably wouldn't believe.

I've been finding most of the nice houses that are reasonably priced are in Mt. Oliver, so I'm going to ask why I should stay away.

OK, I will steer clear... here's some places where I found houses that are pretty nice. Tell me what you think:

Brookline, Summer Hill, Hazelwood, Sheraden

thanks again

well the fact of murders and gun shots on a daily basis is enough for me to wanna stay away. what more reason do you need??

brookline isn't that bad i think. I know I looked at a few houses there. Really what area of town do you need quick access to? Like if you are going to school @ Pitt id recommend sq hill, shadyside, Bloomfield. If you need just access to downtown then brookline shouldn't be that bad.

Lets put it this way, Acidburn lives in East Lib and is afraid to come to my house! Hahaha.
No seriously stay away from Mt. Oliver, Carrick, Mt Washington (could get expensive), East Lib, Parts of Lawerenceville toward homewood, Hill District

Suggestions:
Uptown seems to be turning around ( up behind the Mellon areana), South Side (if you can get cheap), Shadyside, Highland Park, Sqr Hill, Brookline, Dormont, Even the north hills is pretty close if you are taking the bus NOT THE NORTH SIDE, stay away from the mexican war streets.

That should get you started.

^^^hellz ya, lawrenceville is pretty ghetto, near st francis.

ya, i lived in the dorms in allegheny circle, right near mexican war street. it was mad nasty there. we used to walk to the beer distributor right there, and theres some ill $hit goin on around there, lol

dormont and southside are my 2 personal favorites.

cool, thanks for all of the advice and everything.

i did find a real nice house in the north side (here), but that's not a good area of town?

the only thing i'm worried about is if i do buy a house, it's going to need fixed-up a little, and Allegheny Co. has those rediculous regulations when it comes to doing pretty much anything to a house.

North hills isn't bad either. Don't do hazelwood, that's no good. Forrest hills is good. I live in North Braddock, it's somewhat ok. East pittsburgh is right below us, and Braddock right over the hill. Housing is cheap. Southside is tough to find parking. Check out Mt. Washington, there's some nicer living there too. Same with White Oak. All these places have busses to go in and around the city.

i have a friend who lived in mt. oliver...he said that place is just horrible. some of the same stories as posted above. my uncle lives in lawrenceville...thats ok during the day but at night its not a great place to be. mt. washington is ok, i have a friend that lives up there. troy hill is decent, but i wouldnt recommend it. millvale is ok, same with etna and sharpsburg...they are all on the outskirts of town. i dont even live in the city myself...i commute every day from allison park.

As an FYI,

Inside the Pittsburgh city limits its ok to visit, but I would look outside for a place to live. The costs for what you get are rediculous and politics in the city limits are even worse. Try looking in areas like , Penn Hills, Verona, Oakmont, Churchhill, Blonox, Aspinwall, Shaler, Turtle Creek, Wilmerding, Monroeville, North Versalles, Forrest Hills, Edgewood, Swissvale.

Those are atleast on the east side of the city outside limits with access to the 376 and 28 to enter town.

And of course in those areas they have their good and bad, but you can get a lot better bang for your buck and still be within 10 miles of the city.
