Friendly warning about......... taunting?
Monday, November 07, 2005 12:03 PM
Thats what its called when your driving around with those painted on white numbers from the race track. I had heard about it but NEVER thought it was true, till last Friday night. I'm getting ready to leave Capital when I over heard some guys at the concession stand talking about the police at the end of Raceway rd pulling people over and giving them tickets for TAUNTING. It seems its illegal to taunt someone into racing you and the police see those white numbers as you doing just that. Anyway I scrubbed mine off before I left and sure enough they had like a dozen cars pulled into the skate rinks parking lot and were indeed writing them up. I can't remember what the dollar fine was but it carried a TWO POINT penalty!!!

Anyway I just thought I'd share this so none of you get nailed.

The cops know the mentality of the average street racer.

In the eyes of the average street racer..."oh look at that punk with his track numbers on his POS CAVALIER thinking he's all Billy Badass! I'll show him a thing or two!" and stupidity ensues.

They're trying to stop that kind of garbage before it has a chance to happen.

Get me those cops badge numbers so I can buy them some donuts.

I know its but its an old law and unfortunatly its a ticket you cannot fight as they take your picture with your car as the backdrop with the numbers clearly visable. In short you can't fight it.

What state is this law in? I've been driving my car for 2 months now with my numbers on either side. Not to mention that's the most BS law I've ever heard of.

That's like pulling someone over that's driving a Corvette and giving him a ticket for MAYBE SPEEDING. He has a car that is more than capable of it, so he must be guilty, right? </sarcasm>

Re: Friendly warning about......... taunting?

yeah that seems a little extreme. I mean your going home from the track (meaning you just got done racing legally), but they still want to get you for 'taunting'. I totally stand behind cops but that just doesnt seem right to me.
That window paint is hard to get off your windows too, i spent like all day scrubbing them once, lol.

The law is in Maryland I don't know if its in any other state. I posted this because I thinks is too extreme myself but I don't want to hear about any of you guys getting nailed for it.

It is very fightable. Because if you explain that you had just left a legally sanctated event. And haven't had time to wash off the numbers. And the fact they are sitting there and waiting could be classified as harassment. Since they are sitting there waiting. When they know every person that is there mostly likely was there racing on the track. with a few that might not have been but a majority were probably racing. They are trying to stop street racing and get them to go to the track, but now that some are going to the track they are getting them for this. Hello...

Re: Friendly warning about......... taunting?

According to the police its just like leaving the track while still running slicks. In short its for racing only and does not belong on the streets.

are you sure it's a "law" or are you just posting about it because you heard about it?

have you called your precinct and asked them directly?

without that, i'm calling BS on it.

It's retarded to leave the numbers on anyway. You mean to tell me people can't bring some window cleaner and a couple paper towels to the track??

To be perfectly honest, whenever I see someone with numbers left on the car it immediately does make me think they are looking for a race. Why else would you leave it on there??

While I don't think that it should be a 2 point fine for something like that, I can easily see where the cops are coming from.

/\ /\ /\ well I talked to 3 different guys who were compareing tickets at the Wendys across the street. Like I said I can't remember the money amount but I sure remember the TWO POINTS!

p.s. They were also nailed for stuff like no front tag and running slicks on the street.
I'll see if I can get the exact name and all the info you'd need from the cops.

1 - unless they were drag radials, then yes, they should have been nailed. same thing for a lack of front tag.
2 - proof of this claim would be nice.

First of all, some people use white shoe polish rather than window chalk and the polish is a PAIN IN THE ASS to get off. Second, some people are registered for multiple events and find it easy to just leave the numbers on.

Um, wow...like holy shortbus scoob!

@!#$ READ WHAT I SAID, MORON. I DIDN'T SAY the people coming from the track were the ones street racing. I DIDN'T SAY they were doing anything wrong. I said I DO AGREE with the cops trying to cut down on ANY POSSIBLE THING that some retard out there might see as a "reason to try to start a race". Read, comprehend, THEN speak.

If this has been found to be a trigger for the brain-addled idiots out there to turn Main Street into a track, then MORE POWER TO THE COPS for trying to eliminate that trigger. If making a bunch of people wipe the numbers off their windows will do that then so be it. If fining them and assigning points is what it takes to make them do it on their own next time, SO @!#$ BE IT.

You and the rest of the argumentive types from the versus forum on this site need to un-knot your panties, calm the @!#$ down and realize that not every time I post is meant as a swipe at you. If you're gonna get butthurt every time I post, then I STRONGLY recommend you skip over any post that starts with my name. My opinions obviously clash with yours and you obviously can't handle that. In this case I agree with the actions of the police, nothing more. If that offends you, tough. Get over it or get a helmet. It's a tough internet out there and you're clearly not prepared.

well, Terry, i will say one thing.

i guarantee they didn't get pulled over for having numbers on their windows. you said they were missing front tags - that is a primary offense in MD, and is GUARANTEED to get you pulled over. drag slicks instead of drag radials is also an offense - they are not DOT certified for public street use.

just think before you post. this might be some sort of halfassed bylaw, but it's NOT something that will get ANYONE pulled over.

OK, what part of your quote didn't I understand?

"The cops know the mentality of the average street racer. "

We are not talking about street racers here. We are talking about legit events.

"In the eyes of the average street racer..."oh look at that punk with his track numbers on his POS CAVALIER thinking he's all Billy Badass! I'll show him a thing or two!" and stupidity ensues."

If you're agreeing that the cops should think this way, you're as much of a moron as you claim I am.

"They're trying to stop that kind of garbage before it has a chance to happen."

Then they're going after the wrong crowd. Better to go after the kids with wings and fartcans who are obviously inundated with f&f lifestyle bs than legit racers who take it to the track.

"Get me those cops badge numbers so I can buy them some donuts. "

That's just silly.

As for removing the numbers before leaving the track, that's just ghey. Have you ever tried to remove that shoe polish crap? You need a razorblade to get it off. I'm not the type of guy who carries around a razor with me, Jimmy, be glad. Besides, It's just as likely I'm driving a car I bought at an auction and those numbers are the lot and/or item numbers. Point is, if you're following traffic laws, not speeding and such and not purposely pacing other cars in hopes of baiting then, I think it's total BS for any resonable cop to get their panties in a bunch over a bunch of numbers on a car. If you can't find that reasonable, it's just because you can't see past your personal agenda, period.

Oh, and let me address your second post now as well, since you had some choice phrases for me in there too.

"If this has been found to be a trigger for the brain-addled idiots out there to turn Main Street into a track, then MORE POWER TO THE COPS for trying to eliminate that trigger. If making a bunch of people wipe the numbers off their windows will do that then so be it. If fining them and assigning points is what it takes to make them do it on their own next time, SO @!#$ BE IT. "

It takes 2 to tango, if the cops want to follow to make sure all is well, so be it. I'm not against that, but preemptive ticketing does nothing but fill the county's coffer and piss off otherwise good citezens.

"You and the rest of the argumentive types from the versus forum on this site need to un-knot your panties, calm the @!#$ down and realize that not every time I post is meant as a swipe at you. "

You mistake me for somebody who regularly posts in the vs forum I guess. I do not, unless it's a track win. But I have noticed your ever baring presence in there when I do vistit. And every one of your posts has that "holier than thou" feel to it. Personally, that makes me sick. You're no better than Jasmin with your ego. If that gets you too butthurt to read, then I guess you can do yourself a favor and ignore the posts with MY name on them.
