For Sale ads...time to clean things up
Friday, October 28, 2005 5:17 PM
It's been a long standing policy (or non-policy, actually) that for-sale ads have been overlooked in the regional forums. This was to allow people to try to sell some items locally that they might have trouble selling in the classifieds or on sites like eBay due to shipping concerns, size and weight issues, etc.

However, especially in this forum, it has gotten terribly out of control. What started out as the occasional sale ad for hoods, bumpers, full body kits and other large items has since ballooned into a full scale flea market with people posting full lists of every part in their garage. Exacerbating the problem is that some of these people will occasionally RE-post their list in a whole new thread with "UPDATE:" in the title.

When I looked at this forum the other night, 21 of the 25 threads on the front page were for sale ads. That is way too much, and I'd like to suggest that everyone re-examine their methods. Small items or ANY item that you're willing to ship should be placed in the classified section. If you already have a thread running with an item or items for sale and your list changes, please post your updates IN THAT thread. Moving forward, ads that should obviously be placed in the classifieds will be removed to reduce the clutter in this forum.

The important thing to remember is that there has never been a rule saying that for-sale ads are "allowed" in the forums. There has just been a long-standing policy of moderators overlooking their presence, provided the privelege wasn't abused. Let's try to get things cleaned up around here, post smaller items in the classifieds, and let this regional forum be what it's supposed to be--a place where people can find out WHAT'S GOING ON in the Northeast, rather than just what's for sale.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me or contact Dave for more information.

Thanks for your attention, and now back to your regularly scheduled post-whoring.

Well I’m not from the north east but I have used mid east (where I’m from) to sell stuff. I also have used the classifieds and from personal experience the classifieds just suck trying to sell any thing, I think a lot of the problem is you don’t know if you can really trust the person selling the item. I'm not say every one who sells in there is trying to rip some one off but I have seen post were people have and if your new to this site that would pretty much scare me away. I dunno this is just my 2 cents on this.

i'm not saying it's a big deal or trying to spite you, but idk that i really mind people posting that stuff here cause i like to see what is for sale pretty close to me rather than having to weed through the classifieds, which most times is sketchy at best. Again not trying to argue with you, just stating my oppinion and your the mod, what you say goes.

imo I think it is easier to sell within the regional forum only because people traffic these areas more then calssifieds, and I also agree with you, sometimes it gets out of hands, but then again if we had editing features we could go back and edit our one post repeatedly. I think there is a happy medium and yes we have gone over.

like I said, I know for a fact having stuff in the classifieds doesnt sell, I psot it here and its gone within 2 weeks, thats just my personal experience

I am with everyone on this one. I don't mind seeing for sale adds in the forum. As long as the people are actually from our reagion. This is really the only reason I come here. And sometimes to see what the Jersey J's are doing. Maybe I can go one time LOL. I think for sale and jersey J posts make like 80 percent of this forum.

I'm sick of seeing the same things reposted every week.

I think they should still be alloud, just have to look at what the people are acctually selling....

people who post and are just selling a crap load of stock stuff, just lock it most people don't want it anyway

i definetly agree i like the F/S posts in here, i personally think that the classifieds is a joke anymore..

i get excited when i see new F/S ads come up in this forum because then i feel more comfortable buying from people in my area rather than trusting some other nitwit in the classifieds from california.

plus if anybody tries to screw you over they're definetly easier to track down

but seriously, can we like vote on this or what?

I agree with everyone else on this jimmy. I like seeing new parts in the Regonal forum i hate trying to look threw the classifieds to find people close to me and u do get alot of morons in there to. This way is alot easier and less stressful most of the time...but as OYCCI said ur the moderator what u say goes and everyone is just giving their 2 cents not trying to piss u off or tell u what to do.

i dont think its a bad thing, id much rather get something from someone in person no matter how small just cause shipping is a pain, u gotta wait, and people can screw u over also.

agreed.

i think there should be a sticky at the top, and people should put their stuff in there. there's a PM feature on this forum, now - why don't people use that to contact sellers and buyers, rather than creating a thread that ends up getting way off topic? the only things allowed in that thread should be FS items...all other posts should be removed.if they need something edited, they should submit it to someone who manages all that stuff, and can pass it on to you(since i think you're the only mod in here).

this is the case on many other forums that have regional sections, and it seems to work pretty well.

The classifieds are fine if you don't mind geting screwed and the person screwing you is too far away to do anything about it. I've read I don't know how many posts in General begging for any help or any ideas as to how someone can get money back from some else thats states away and never sent there stuff but kept the cash. Peoples are tired of getting screwed and haveing noone be able to do anything about it. Posting for sale items in local makes sence cause that way you can meet face to face and actualy get your stuff . noone here has a problem with it I don't see why all of a sudden its becomeing an issue.

Semper Fi SAINT. May you rest in peace.

The same stuff happens in the regional forums as well. It can happen anywhere. I DO have a problem with seeing all these classified posts; seeing the same people posting the same stuff that didn't sell the previous 20 weeks posting it YET AGAIN in the forum.

agreed...i mind it as well. i spend nowhere near as much time in here as i used to, because there's nothing of worth here anymore - just people peddling the stuff they can't sell.

here's a tip, guys...if you can't sell it here, EBAY! or at least bump your old thread. don't keep making new threads.

this is what i think we should do (since apparently no one read it or had any sort of comment).

sounds good, lets give it a try

Re: For Sale ads...time to clean things up

Some people seem to like the ads here, and my intention isn't to get rid of them altogether...I think we can agree that for sale ads have gotten WAY out of control in this forum.

Where the problem lies is that I think the real purpose of a regional forum is to find out what is going on in an area...meets, shows, parties, anything interesting like that. This forum, however, has turned into the Dundalk flea market (Bawlmer people will get that ).

So let's try out a simple set of rules to start with...

If you post a for sale ad, DON'T BUMP IT. This is an active forum and if nobody replies, nobody is interested.

If you post a list of parts for sale, and sell some of them (or have more parts to add to the list), post the changes IN THE SAME THREAD. Some people, of course, will try to be sneaky and post an "update" every day or so as a way to bump their thread...but I think that'll be blatantly obvious and it'll be dealt with if it happens.

For sale ads that get grossly off topic, turn into flame wars, get jacked or break any of the other "standard" thread rules should get locked or deleted.

In the Canadian Mid-East forum, Kevin (Wild Weasel) discussed a "time limit" for classified threads...basically if it had no replies for a week or two that nobody was interested and he would lock it. If someone is interested after that, JBO does have a PM feature now to contact the seller. Would something like that work here?

I don't want anyone to think there's suddenly going to be an "iron fist" cracking down on classified ads here. I'd like to get everyone's input on what direction you'd like to take, but I also think we should maintain some sort of control over it. When over half or 3/4 of the threads on the front page are for sale ads, that's a bit excessive.

Thoughts?
