Legal Street Racing...

Alright before you have a fit read what I'm going to say

A friend and I were talking about how rediculous the roads are here in NJ with idiots, especially the infamous Rt 37.

37 is the main artery into Seaside Heights, famous for MTV's beachouse during the summer for a few years. The road is crawling with everything from young punks in beat up crap-mobiles to 10 second cars and faster.. needless to say, every stop light is a drag race

now its known to the local police that 37 is a hot spot for "street racing" activity, every year from late spring till early fall a special anti street racing police task force is appointed to watch over 37 for racing, and I would imagine it uses a lot of resources.

My friend and I came up with a brilliant idea.. that could hopefully help both police and enthusiasts.

Legal Street Racing... yup you heard it here!

Basically, an abandoned road... no slips, no tree, nothing. Just a flagman like normal... with a rough estimate of 1/4 mile... 1/2 mile or longer whatever... with a mark for the finish line with a spotter calling the winner

but have a police pressence, making sure things stay friendly, and safe. Either find an extremely remote location for events, or close down a road for racing purposes from 10pm until say... 4am?

it would keep things in a controlled environment with the police involved, and help to alleviate the street racing "plague" thats apparently hitting the nation.

what are your thoughts on this idea?

legal street racing IS a good idea...as long as it's off main roads.

i think los angeles did something like this, they call it 'beat the heat', and you can actually race the cops! but everything is on a side road, and its only at certain times. its VERY popular

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't a big part of street racing the illegality of it? How much fun will it be racing on an abandoned road thats crawling with cops, even if it is just to keep things friendly? Theres a right way to race - on the track. What if something would go wrong? I'm sure some d*ckhead liability attorney could find a way to make those cops resposible.

I don't want to be a "negative nathan" here, but the way the world is today, it just seems to remote. Can you tell I have thought about this already? LOL Have a good one

legalizing street racing won't help anything. People will still street race in places where it isn't legal. I mean I know most people that do stupid little street races are because they all met up somewhere at random and then went out for a run. Or pulled up next to a guy at a light and then went for a run.

Even Englishtown had nights where they have "street racing" basically you get to use the track but no ET comes up or anything just a light that flashes who is the winner. I don't know if they still do it anymore. But I have seen other tracks around the country that do this, and I know there are even places that have taken abandoned roads and done exactly what you said. I think Discovery Channel had a documentary on this as well. In the end it came down to the people who are willing to race on the track went to these locations, and maybe a couple other people joined but for the most part the real street racers didn't bother. They just kept looking for different locations where it is illegal, fun to dodge traffic, and keep banging up their cars and killing each other.

Trust me PJ you know I love racing just as much as the next person. But there is no easy way around this. If there was it would be done already. Of coruse now with police from NJ and NY going after everyone that speeds as of 5 MPH or more isn't going to help either even though they think it will.

pj your a smart guy... you should realize that police dont do it for everyones saftey
they crack down because it is easy income. speeding in an un-inforcable law...

granted it helps with the saftey of the public at large but they mostly pull people over for money

that is why they let you drive 10-15 miles a hour over the speed limit in most places..... because it isn't worth pulling you over, it doesn't bring in enough money

i think it will still be popular.... but it wont be productive in preventing street racing, or detouring it.

the only way it will help detour it is to have a track that is open day and night for racing. and for cheap

ok lets all pull our money together to get a couple acers of land. Then we can make our own strip and race on it .

Actually in NY, In order to make a street race legal, the police have to be on hand, Blocking off the roads and be a suspervisor of sorts.

The law actually allows, as long as there is a police presence.

So who wants to argue a 35 years old law to a State Judge?

last night I got to thinking about this

another main stay of street racing is when money's involved

I'm not sure how the police or "legalized" street racing would allow money changing hands

because the local government would prolly want a cut of the money somehow...

ur prolly talkin about keystone...they do that. out here in western pa, there is an event held once a month called the Flashlight Drags, it is sponsered by Altered Gas. The local police shut down the zelienople airport once a month just for this purpose. its $5 to watch, and an extra $20 to race.

Econator your totally wrong in saying it wouldnt do anything, They did this in SanDiego every friday night they shut down a section of a stadium parking lot and had 1/8th mile races that effectibely dropped street racing off by 99% the website for the races is www.racelegal.com

"The latest SDPD Drag Net statistics indicate a 99% drop in the incidence of “organized” illegal street racing activity in San Diego."

I'm actually extremely surprised to see that much of a drop I would have expected the other way around with a drop of 10-20%. Of course in the end I don't know if the drop is true. I mean even in reality every time you do a short spirt run you are street racing no matter what the terms or not. Heck on my ride to work this morning I street raced about 3 times with in 4 miles. Now did I ever hit any crazy speeds or get caught no. Was it illegal and technically street racing yes. We where doing short spirts of up to 60 MPH street races and the cops are just letting us go as long as we don't do anything completely stupid. However a statistic like us this morning does not get included in street racing. I think it happens much more than they report it's just that they can't find it just yet. Of course as gas prices increase, traffic increases, and police presense increases street racing as popular as it was will always naturally decrease.

so would people still be able to park along the street your racing on? How many times a week or month would this be done?
because it sounds to me a lot like the track. Might as well just go there if you want to race.
I mean you are talking about just doing it on an abandoned road not populated with cars with rules enforced.

heres my idea on this whole thing....the reason i streetrace is because its more convienent to drive 5 mins down the road and pick who i want to race vs. drive an hour and a half and race whatever joe schmo who thinks his turbo deisel pickup truck is fast....to me id rather do rolls down 30 toward lancaster....
