Alleged Ringleader of Charles Co. Fires Wins Change of Venue

Greenbelt, Md. (AP) - A man authorities say was the ringleader in setting fires that did $10 million dollars in damage to homes under construction in southern Maryland will be tried in Baltimore.

A judge Friday granted the request of Patrick Walsh's lawyer to move the case from the federal courthouse in Greenbelt.

William Purpura argued that because of media coverage of the case in the Washington area, his client would have trouble getting an impartial jury there.

Walsh is one of five men being prosecuted for the blazes set at the Hunters Brooke development in Charles County. Two men reached plea agreements with prosecutors but have not been sentenced. Two others, like Walsh, are awaiting trial.

Judge Unseals Md. Arson Suspects' Written Statements

Greenbelt (AP) - A federal judge has unsealed statements given to investigators by men charged in the Charles County arsons.

Judge Roger Titus denied requests by defense attorneys who hoped to avoid more bad publicity for their clients.

In one statement, suspect Roy McCann describes a meeting at a Denny's restaurant in southern Maryland in which Patrick Walsh, the alleged ringleader, started talking about his plans to set fires.

McCann also descrives how other charged with the crimes prepared to set the blazes at the Hunters Brooke development.

The December fires caused $10 million dollars' worth of damage. Many of the families planning to move into the development were black, and prosecutors have raised racism as one of the motives.

Actually it was a group that committed the crimes...they were members here and had formed their own jbody club for their area. They caused problems even before the crimes happened, Richard (EcoFire) had a run-in with them.

I remember when I first heard the news reports about that, and that the suspects were members of a local "street racing gang" (typical negative news slant).

Then they said the "gang" was called the "Unseen Cavaliers", and the first thing to cross my mind was "wouldn't that be @!#$ up if these guys were members of JBO?" Small world.

One of the guys pleaded guilty last week, and the rest are due up soon.

Insurers Sue Security Firm Over Charles County Arson

Greenbelt, Md. (AP) - Insurers are seeking more than $3 million from the security company that was hired to guard the Charles County subdivision that was the target of arsonists last December.

The lawsuit for negligence and breach of contract was filed in federal court in Greenbelt on behalf of the homebuilder's insurance company, Axis Specialty, and underwriters at Lloyds of London.

The suit claims that Security Services of America violated an agreement that it would provide guards of the highest character and that the guards would be properly trained and supervised.

One guard has been charged in an indictment with lying to investigators and another has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit arson.

The fire destroyed at least ten homes and damaged more than a dozen others under construction at the Hunter's Brooke subdivision near Indian Head.
