I just learned how to port and polish cylinder head for 2.4L
Monday, October 08, 2007 5:34 PM
I recently was taught by my buddy how to port and polish heads... I wanted to get my gf's ported but didn't have the funds.. So he just showed me how to do it. And now I would like to offer my services to you guys for cheap for 250 w/ exchange and shipping I will port and polish a 2.4L head for you. I can't reseat the valves in the head, cause I don't have the special tools to do so. I will have pictures of her head up on here as soon as I clean up some sections by the valve guides. But if you want to see the job now just email me at trucavss@tmail.com.... and I will send pics back to you.... so hopefully this helps with us spending a lot of money on gettin heads ported

No offense, but unless you know where the water jackets go through as well as how much "meat" you have before hitting them, I wouldn't trust your porting skill with a 40ft pole. There's more to it than scuffing the surface with a dremel and hogging out the ports to the size of the gaskets.

That would be the difference between what you can do for free and paying someone 800 dollars for a professional port job.

Correct. The fact that he's offering work for $250 suggests that he's more toward the unprofessional spectrum of P&P...

Having someone compromise a water jacket on a head that is destined to be under boost is NOT something anyone should be doing especially when you put thousands of dollars into other regions of a motor build.

Another classic example of "Do it right the first time, or don't do it at all."

Ok the guy who taught me aint no back street porter.... so yeah I will take offense to that... its not like I picked a dremel and just started "scuffing" this would be the same GM tech who built my 3800 series 2 supercharged cavalier, helped me wire it, and tunes it along with all the ls1's in columbus ohio.... so if you wanna pay 800 dollars for a "professional" job then be my guest. But I also didn't pay 8,000 dollars to have my cavalier built with this motor either and its my daily driver and works fine

Also the 250 price is just to help you guys out.... cause 800 is outragoues for porting an aluminum head....

I would much rather you guys spend your other 550 dollars on other performance parts other than getting raped for 800 for 10 hours worth of work....

But idc its your money not mine... and if you wanna you can ask david (datwhitecavy) what they look like when finished because I made sure he saw them after they were done.

So you're saying that the next mod to your car is gonna be a P&P on the heads.

NICE!

Yesah my next mod is p&p heas, cam, intercooler, 2.8 pulley, roller rockers, lightweight pushrods, 3 inch exhaust and tune... it should make 400+whp

Bonnett- I am sure between me and johnny (Rutan TA) we can get yours done. With every head I do I have him look over everything to make sure that the head will flow nice and make sure it is good before I will ship it or sell it to anyone.... so yeah you can trust me. But let me know.

Matt- I have a head here I can get to work on and when I am finished I can have you look at it. I am very careful about my work and wanna make sure it makes good power and won't damage anything.... but I will get to work on it. Whenever you want it just let me know.

If you guys want pics email me at trucavss@tmail.com and I will send pics of my gf's head

Anyone can port a head. On the intake side focus on the floors and exhaust side focus on the roofs. The only problem is you don't have a flow bench. How do you plan on getting the ports to flow the same with no flow bench? Granted it will flow better than a stock head but it will not come close to flowing as much as a head ported on a bench and ported by someone who knows what they are doing. There is such a thing as porting to much and killing port velocity. Are you going to take them to a machine shop and have the valve pockets cut? You cant do this effectively or correctly by hand you will ruin the valve seats, and if you don't get the packets cut all you are doing is gasket matching, the biggest restriction to flow in a head is right at the valve pocket. Sorry but porting takes years and years of experience. Different heads flow at different rates, you have to screw up a few heads to figure out where material needs to be removed to increase flow and not cause turbulence or lower the velocity and not to break through water passages or on OHV heads break through the push rod and head bolt bosses. I wish you luck in your venture but for $250.00 your doing nothing more than anyone else on here can do with some time and a grinder. I would suggest you go spend the money for a good drill press, a head jig and a flow bench before you try to charge money for a "port job"

250 is a hell of a deal...if i had a spare head and still had my Z, id jump on this devon!

im sure your great at it, i dont doubt it one bit, obviosely if you can do a 3.8 series 2 s/c swap in a cav you've got some talent....great work!!

btw devon, are you guys going to be having another bash anytime this season up there? id like to make another weekend trip

Yeah it takes experience but the guy that taught me and inspects them has the experience.... like RUTAN TA said if you wanna put a "professional" job on a flow bench with stock valves against mine I would be more than happy to.

Bonnett- I can't get deals on valvetrain parts unless they are stock parts....

I am working on another head right now for anyone and you never-ever touch the bottom when porting cause that is where the water jackets flow through well the majority of the water.

Hummmm.... So your telling me that

Well your job will have stock valves too, so no matter what you will loose because a professional will use a flow bench and have allot more experience than you, period. Have you ever seen a flow bench? Have you ever used one? Do you know what the advantages are?

Quote:

well that proves my point exactly. The transition between the floor of the port and where it dumps into the valve pocket is the most important area on the intake side. That quote shows me that you don't have knowledge to do a correct port job. I would never pay anyone $250.00 for something anyone can do in their garage in a few hours. Do you know why a good port job costs $800.00? Because they will have close to 40 hours in each head. Let me guess you can do just as good of a job in under 4 hours can't you.

I am not trying to bust your chops but all your doing is gasket matching and anyone can do that.
