Honestly this is freaking idiotic ... seriously most people cannot afford to pay these fines (especially for simple speeding - $750) ... FFS... The Communist-wealth finally figured out how to get people off the roads...
I vote in EVERY election possible, and no one ever gave me the right to vote against this law... some democracy there...
VA's Traffic Laws are totally a money making organization... NOT COOL...
-The "Censored" One ... seems like forreal this time...
PS: @!#$ Triple A ... there are better auto clubs out there anyway

Virginians Face $3,000 Traffic Ticket
July 1) - Virginia is for lovers, or so the state slogan has declared since 1969. Starting today, Virginia also will be the home of the $3,000 traffic ticket. In an effort to raise money for road projects, the state will start hitting residents who commit serious traffic offenses with huge civil penalties.
Beginning Sunday, Virginia is adding new civil charges to traffic fines. They range from $750 to $3,000 and will be added to existing fines and court costs. The civil penalty for going 20 mph over the speed limit will be $1,050, plus $61 in court costs and a fine that is typically about $200
The new civil charges range from $750 to $3,000 and be added to existing fines and court costs. The civil penalty for going 20 mph over the speed limit will be $1,050, plus $61 in court costs and a fine that is typically about $200.
Virginia's traffic law is one of several thousand new state laws that take effect Sunday. Jan. 1 and July 1 are the most popular dates for state laws to become official.
July 1 is especially popular for new taxes and fees because it's the start of the budget year in 46 states. For example, Arkansas will cut its sales tax on groceries from 6% to 3% Sunday.
Virginia's new traffic penalties are expected to raise $65 million a year and are part of an effort to improve the state's roads without raising taxes.
A first-time drunken driver will face a $2,250 civil penalty, plus fines and court costs that typically run about $500 or more. Driving without a license? That's a mandatory $900 civil penalty, in addition to the ordinary $100 for a fine and court costs.
"It's outrageous," says traffic court attorney Thaddeus Furlong of Springfield, Va. "When Mr. and Mrs. Middle Class find out what they have to pay, there's going to be a backlash like you've never seen."
Some other states impose extra civil penalties for traffic offenses, but the cost is usually $100 or $200, Furlong says. "What sets this apart is the Draconian size of the civil penalties," he says.
Another difference: The civil penalties apply only to Virginia residents, not out-of-state drivers. Virginians must pay in three installments over 26 months or lose their licenses. The state Legislature didn't think it could enforce the extra penalties in other states.
Motorist club AAA Mid-Atlantic supports the new penalties.
"These penalties are harsh, but normal fines haven't gotten people to drive sanely. Maybe this will," says Lon Anderson, spokesman for AAA Mid-Atlantic.
He says the new law will help reduce the nearly 1,000 traffic deaths the state records annually.
"We wish motorists didn't have to pay more, but the fact is Virginia's transportation trust fund is broke," Anderson says.
Other new laws taking effect July 1:

yeah... i dont have a problem with fines for reckless or DUI or Driving on Suspended license... but a huge fine for simple speeding is dumb... a ton of regular drivers can easily get a simple speeding ticket...
whats worse is its also $750 for impeding traffic... so everyone who drives way under the speed limit are gonna get fined too...
Kyle I've known about thhis for over 6mos now, I thought we discussed it, o well guess not. This is the reason I will be geN my all my cars registered in & getting a N. Carolina lisence this fall. lol
It beats a Honda!
imma buy a residence in NC forreal forreal... *F*K* Virginia ... the whole communist-wealth government can suck mah **** and kiss my European butt.

Not taking any jobs in Virginia...as long as this law is around.
wow......VA was bad enough before...but now? @!#$...avoid at all costs. damn! my dad lives in suffolk, so ive driven the length of the state a few times and i tell you what....once you get past richmond, EVERYONE on the interstate is going 20+ over the speed limit. i usually go 10 over around there and i get passed left and right. but not once have i seen a wreck along the interstate in VA. i mean hell, 20 over the speed limit is still only 85.
f*ck virginia
i maintain 75 out side of hampton roads... and 65 in hampton roads...
next time your in suffolk hit me up... thats only 15 - 20 or 30 -40 min (depending on which end of suffolk) from me....
i havent been down there in a few years due to $$, but maybe by next summer i'll be making a trip down. if i ever find a good enough job, id like to try and make it down around Christmas time (my lil sis is coming in from the peace corps).
and dad just moved to suffolk from chesapeake and i havent been to his new house yet, but he had it built for him and its supposed to be pretty nice sized. damn, i wish the bastard would throw some of that $ my way
but next time i go down i'll post up for the hampton roads Js to see....maybe we could get a mini meet going?
yea man... just let me know...
^^^
the smart thing to do is to not drive 10 miles over ... starting at simple speeding 10 - 19 over its a $750 DMV fine + $75 court costs + $5 for every mile over...
You seriously believe this @!#$???
Are you as stupid as the person who posted this on MYSPACE???
Don't you think if something like this was actually going to happen you might and this could be the slightest possibility heard about it on the news or maybe read it in the paper??? Or do you believe every bull@!#$ post you read on myspace???

Fake or not, that's still not high enough. First DUI conviction should be a $10K fine with a 1 year suspended license, minimum. 2nd offense should be $15K with 3 years suspension. 3rd offense, $15K, 6 months in jail plus 10 years suspension. Anything beyond that, permanent license revocation.

this law is just gonna cause more people to run from the cops to try to avoid a $2 ticket
Luckly I live in NY but I might be getting stationed here within the next year
I've noticed that it still hasn't slowed anyone down. And the new turn siginal thing... yea still get cut off by people not using them. I still think the fines are BS though.
