some info on the race

What is the Great Race?

They called it madness, a twenty-two thousand mile race around an often unpaved and uncharted world in a machine that was until then, unproven. Yet, in 1908, five teams from Europe and America embarked on what seemed like an impossible mission: an automobile race, from Times Square, in New York City, U.S.A., to Paris, France, the long way. Only three teams successfully crossed the finish line nearly a century ago.

The 2006 National Guard Great Race celebrates that ultimate automotive adventure with a 4,100-mile race of time and endurance from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to San Rafael, California. The purse? Rally Partners, Inc., the event organizers have posted a total cash purse of $270,000, with $100,000 going to the Grand Champions.

How the competition works

Laying out the course takes a year of planning and preparation. Prior to the start, our Director of Competition drives over twenty thousand miles creating the race route. Along the way, exact times are allotted for every maneuver including speed-changes, stops, starts and turns. Computer calculations then determine the optimum driving-times for each leg, which are given to the racers in the form of precise driving instructions.

On the Race, Drivers and Navigator teams must then work together to match the computers predetermined "perfect" times. Timing checkpoints secretly located along the course, check each team's accuracy as they race by. Low score wins.

Who is a Great Racer?

From a Rocket Scientist, to a Hairdresser, a NASCAR team owner to a Junior High School Student, Great Racers are ordinary people, doing something extraordinary-racing classic cars across America. Driven by that same thirst for adventure and discovery as the original Great Racers, our modern day road-warriors celebrate that 1908 Race in a competition that is both daunting and challenging. The rewards far outweigh a $270,000 purse. Our Great Racers discover something about America and themselves when they take on the ultimate automotive adventure.

A 4000 mile road rally. Neat.
