These cell phones are perfectly legal, but they're raising more than a few eyebrows in Defiance. Unlike ordinary cell phones, Trac Fones don't need to be registered. They're disposable and virtually untraceable. Defiance police says they're opening an investigation after a man allegedly bought nearly 30 Trac Fones all in one day at several stores.
Police chief Norm Walker told us, "We received multiple calls after that for the same subject, same vehicle." Police say callers described the man as mMiddle Eastern and he was driving a silver car with Michigan license plates. Now, Defiance police say they're working with the FBI to find who out this man is. Walker said, "They've requested in the past these kinds of things be forwarded to them and we've done that."
We asked Defiance residents if they think this has anything to do with racial profiling. Walker said, since he bought so many phones and went to different stores, "I don't think it's racial profiling." Renee Everhart sees it differently. "They wouldn't be doing it if it were me running around buying Trac Fones, absolutely not."
So does the government have a right to look into this? Walker said, "The situation we are in now, we need to take some steps to protect our citizens." But Everhart maintains, "I think they're infringing on our rights a lot more than they should be. It's not right."
We called the FBI but they did not return our calls about the status of the federal investigation. The Bush administration's secret surveillance program allowed intelligence agents to monitor suspected terrorist's cell phones. The controversy stems over whether eavesdropping without warrants is or should be legal.
Ohio's Republican senator Mike Dewine has introduced legislation to allow the warrantless surveillance for up to 45 days without court or congressional approval. Senate judiciary chairman Arlen Specter said he wants to write a law to legalize the program, with Congressional oversight.
I'm not saying this guy might be a terrorist but we should keep our eyes peeled for a similar description and let the law enforcement know of his location just in case he is.

does seem a bit odd. like he is trying to hide the fact that he's buying a ton of phones, i think he'd be allot less obvious doing it at one store and just saying its for his business.
the goverment will never win this type of fight as far as infringement of rights. if nothing happens the public will cry out the goverment is taking away their rights. if something does happen thepublic cries out the goverment didnt do enough.

Here in Ohio lately have been a hot bed for terrorist activity.. A couple years ago they caught Iman Farris that truck driver that plotted to blow up a NY bridge.. You also got some dude here in Columbus that plotted to blow up the Polaris Mall.. Then, just last month I think they arrested those dudes in Toledo or Cleveland at a Mosque? I can't remember which city though..
For some reason, they like chillin here.

If he lived there or not, the point of it was that it's obviously that the target isn't some piss-ant town in Ohio, and he was being sarcastic about leaving. I'm sure a terrorist wouldn't go to LA, NYC, or Chicago and buy 30 Trac-phones...again, along the same point.
I have guys that come in and buy them, but we limit them to 3. Most of the guys buy them when theyre on sale for really cheap and resell them in their party store or cell phone place.
maybe he has a lot of friends, he likes to be in contact with them.

As for profiling.... the majority of terrorist are middle eastern decent so that is who your going to watch. You just use what you know?

I was watching the Seige (the terriorism movie w/ bruce Willis that was delayed to release because of 911) and noticed two middle easter guys that drove to the theater in a silver honda accord 2door watched the movie and speaking a middle easter tounge, but they left in a BMW M3? Weird?
as for ebay they should find a middle man because the sales of cell phones is two fold......they sell them for capital on a bomb and use any leftovers to detonate it

What piqued my interest was if he lives in MI why would he go all the way down to Defiance to buy the tracfones? He could have picked them up in Bryan, Swanton, B.G. or even Toledo. Just seems kinda odd to me.
should of just went to best buy and got them all in one shot. I would guess drug deals over terrorist. It's easier to track your runners and mules and be safe if it's all done on tracs

Being from Dearborn, Detroit and the metro area myself, I might think that he was buying them for his store, or one of his dirty relatives. Dearborn IS the largest concentration of Aaarabs in the world out side of the middle-east. Why Defiance, mabey he has a Bro that owns the store.

So, let me get this strait. Everybody with a silver car that has a michigan license plate, middle eastern AND is talking on their cell phone ... COULD potentially be this guy. Sounds exactally what our government likes to do. It would atleast help if they could get a license plate number.
