How's the economy down here? My final college semester is almost up and i am thinking of moving out of the northeast. I have a high school friend living near Shelby, NC and i think thats going to be the area im going focus on.
I am going to have my Associates degree in Diesel Technology so i'll be looking for a job around the trucking industry. My buddy told me that the cost of living isnt bad and the jobs pay well, is it true?
I'll proboly want to rent a place instead of buying and it'll be just me(no g/f).
How bad are the inspection laws in NC, what can i get away with(ex. no cat, tint)?
Feel free to add anything that you guys might think that would be helpful. Thanks.

The economy sucks everywhere. I'm in NC right now job hunting, but no luck so far.
Shelby is ok. Probably not much for you to do around there as far as your degree is concerned. There are alot of diesel mechanic shops around the I85 I77 junction in the Charlotte area. Cost of living around Charlotte is high so if you could handle a 45 minute to an hour commute depending on traffic from shelby youd be good. Inspections are kind of a pain for the 96 and up with our new emissions laws. Basically if you have a check engine light your not gonna pass inspection. window tint is 35%. If you know an inspector here you can get away with the cat and window tint issues.
My 1st choice for employment would be with Allison(automatic transmissions). I am going to have a chance to talk with their reps in a month or two and i'll see what info i can get from them.

doooo it Kyle.
Shelby is an ok town, just depends on what area of the town you live in.
not much to do cept go to their local 1/8th mile track which is aptly named Shady Side.
You'll find more Diesel jobs around charlotte as said above.
being that you would be close to charlotte there are alot of trucking companies here. the last time i looked i think there are over 600 trucking companies headquartered in the charlotte region. now, just like everywhere else the economy is bad. yes the cost of living is low IMO. as far as the inspections go, like rx7guy said, if you know an inspector you can get away with not having a cat and dark tint. but if you have a check engine light you wont pass. if you like cars, there are plenty of things to do. nascar is big around here especially this time of year.
Like all area's this area (Charlotte) is feeling it. If you are looking for a Job it takes about a month to three months to get a job so start applying now if you are moving in the next few months. There are several good areas between shelby gastonia hickory charlotte moorseville.
