Trouble etting a custom CD player for my cav..

I went to best but today to get the dash kit and wiring harness that I needed for my 05 cav. The guy at best buy told me I needed to get a special wiring harness that cost around $200.. He said if I don't get it, then my gauges wont work right, and if I was ever in a wreck, the the airbags would not deploy. He also said that all GM vehicles 2003 and up were like this. I know when I had my 2003 silverado, I just went to walmart and bought the wiring harness and dash kit for about $40.. Has anyone else heard about this??

you can get a wiring harness at wally world for 30 bucks that keeps your chimes. the only thing thats affected is the chimes. i belive if you search the audio forums theres a 10 dollar harness you can use. but as far as what they told you. bs

Its BS its your typical cheap harness that you need. All the rest of what he told you is their "scare tactic" to make you spend more.

True. Not having the chimes isn't even a big deal. Life is better without them. Tell him to hook up the damn radio and stop trying to sell you stuff.

All it would affect is the chimes. If you can't live without those you'll need the interface to make them work.

everything said here, 2x's.. I was told that I'd lose the door chimes, the dome lights when the door was opened and the theft system would be disabled and that the key fob would be useless.. shows what he knows with my $30 Circuit City harness

BUT... alot of the cheaper harnesses wont have the power wire in the plug, so you might have to run one from the cd player's harness to a power source in the car.. we ran mine strait to the ignition wire. when we first wired up my cd player, it wouldnt come on so I thought that it got messed up for the 6 months it sat dorment while we were doing my engine swap. man, did I feel like a dumbass when I bought a brand new cd player THEN found out about the power wire... its all good, brand new Alpine from Crutchfield for $150 is awesome to me

haha i've never heard the gauges not working thats a good one.... never believe best buy, circuit city or any other store like that that claim to having install skills. keyword claim lol

just go to walmart and buy the cheap kit find you own switched power source, or if you feel fancy and want the radio to stay on for 10 mins or til the door opens and want the chimes buy the other cheap gm interface kit

I got my HU from Crutchfield. It came with the mounting adaptor and wiring harness, everything works fine. Of course mines an older model, w/o all the high tech bells and whistles.

I went to walmart today and bought a wiring harness. I think i'm done with best buy (after them telling me that BS). The wiring harness hooks up through something that looks like it has a speaker in it (came with the kit) so maybe it will still have the chime? But I don't really care for that. Thanks for all the replies! I just need to buy a CD player now. anyone have and suggestions on what brand? I thinking maybe Pioneer.

I recommend you take the harness back. Goto Critchfiel.com and look through their headunits and buy the one that has the features, brand ,etc... that you want. I got my Pioneer there. They may not have the best prices online, but when you figure in the mounting kit, antenna adaptor, wiring harness, very simple detailed instructions for your car come with it (units over $129) and free shipping (on orders over $129) and the customer service, it's really hard to beat the overall package. If you have a problem, they damn near jump through hoops to resolve it to your satisfaction. Their in Va, so standard shipping only take about two days (to FL & most of the SE) and if you order is in by 5pm that business day, it ships that day.

I know, I sound like an advertisement, but I've been that satisfied with them and their sevice, as most anyone else who's delt with them.

and I agree with Jack 110%.. I ordered my Alpine online thru their site, paid $150 shipped and it came with everything Jack mentioned, and it was a current top of the line model and everything.. like I said, Crutchfield is the shiz-nite

as far as what brand to get, I myself as well as everyone I know who bought an Alpine has had amazing luck. I have a friend who's had his since '01, and its still kickin hard. I've owned a few Pioneers and they've been good to me, but the Alpine has been the best.. if I may suggest, stay as far away from Dual as humanly possible. I got one from a guy I worked with and it was a total POS. it had hardly no power and was picky about what cds to play, so you can forget about data discs. and my sis went thru 3 in 3 yrs, even when she bought the best one they had available at the time
