you measure tread depth by 32nds of an inch. 5 to 6/32nds. a new tire i believe is 9 and a @!#$ty tire is 3 and under
a "new" tire depends on the tire... but "unsafe" by most shops is under 3/32. just to throw that out there. i hope you get everything gone...
