ocala area jbodies..
Monday, February 18, 2008 12:21 PM
hi,

i live in wisconsin and am facing a decision. my parents are retiring from General Motors this year, and plan to retire in florida next year since my dads buddy lives down there than runs a pro shop and they both work for morich..(bowling)

anyway, they asked me if i am going to move with them down there... first i goto University of Wisconsin Milwaukee so i would have to call them and see if i can transfer credits..

thats the main thing, What universities are around the Ocala area ( around an hour drive in any direction i suppose) which would be equivalent to UWM or have a computer science degree program?

second, hows the car clubs down there and racing? (drag strips, etc)

any input would be greatly appreciated, since the first thing that will influence my decision is school, second is the car situation, third is my job (i work at UPS, any facilities nearby that anyone works at?)

thanks a bunch

Ocala is within a hour (closer) to UF (University of Florida). Also schools in Orlando about a hour maybe a little more south of Ocala. Ocala has a decent J scene. Gainesville raceway is within a hour of Ocala which is a NHRA track.

so far i found univesity of florida in gainesville and university of florida in orlando. it appears they both have computer science programs. there is a UPS hub that offers the earn and learn program (1500 a semester for school) in orlando.. so maybe goto school and work in orlando while living in ocala?

is the track in gainesville pretty nice?

so john, if you were in my shoes, would you move down to florida from wisconsin and transfer schools and job?

btw, its 15 degrees and partly cloudy here right now.... snow and ice everywhere...

Ocala J right here Orlando is about an hr and 15 minutes from here, and they have a few schools to look into.. Gainesville is about 45 minutes from here, but all you got is UF for schooling.. and up until this last Saturday, Gainesville had an awesome track.. it didnt go so well for anybody

Florida in general has one of the best scenes in the country, as far as I'm concerned.. I've been all over, and havent seen quite as many as in this state.. not saying THE best, but we rock it down here

UCF said they can transfer all the credits if UWM is an accredited school, which it is. so far so good looking at the schooling part. i just need to keep over a 2.5 GPA which will be slightly challenging since i screwed up for 3 semesters because of a 3rd shift job. but i suppose i have my motivation to BUST ASS! loli bet its real nice down there right now... its 7 degrees here...

are you in the floridagmclub.com car club dizasteer child?

another ocala j here...the scene is pretty good here in central fla, we all have meets in our areas at least once a month and sometimes travel to each others areas too for their meetings (ocala, jax, orlando) you know about the schools as mentioned already and all kinds of tourist traps and such, all about an hour drive in any direction...we also have a pretty good selection of car shows to attend throughout the year ranging from lowrider in miami and tampa, spring break nationals in daytona, HIN show in orlando, blood drag in live oak and slamfest in tampa...thats all i can think of off the top of my head, i'm sure there is more...and most important we have our annual j-meet spring/summer time and i would say probably one of the biggest meets in all the j-body org, we average 35-45 rides

Both UF and UCF are great schools. Once UCF finishes it's Med School(which is supposed to be one of the finest facilities in the country) will be the biggest school in Florida. It's a beautiful school, alot of new facilities. Probably about an hour half from Ocala, depending upon where you live. UF is nice too (GoGators!Yeah, I'm a die hard fan, 33+ years). It's about a 30-45 minute drive, depending where you live in Ocala.

The J-Body scene is great in Florida, alot of really nice cars. The annual meet often out numbers the Bash! Alot of great people in the J-Body scene down here too! The local meets are usually fun. Ocala isn't anything special, but it's in the middle of everything. Just about anything you can think of is about an hours drive.

I know, this all the same things said above, but I just wanted to reaffirm what everyone's saying.

You said you are worried about your GPA, do you have your AS Degree yet? For some reason if you don't both CFCC (Ocala) and SFCC in (GVille) have GOOD Computer Courses..... Sante Fe is a direct step to UF in most cases..... I went to SFCC and have a AS Degree in Biomedical Electronics..... One thing nice about SFCC is you can get a Triple AS Degree in Biomed/Comp Prog. and general electronics if you want to go that way.

Ocala is a good town to raise a family in, close to everything but still quite. If you like the outdoors there are a lot of hiking/riding/horseback sites around and if you like to scuba or snorkel the ocean/gulf is about 1.5 hrs away and 4-5 freshwater springs within an hour drive and I won't even get started on the amount of lakes and rivers to go boating and jet ski in.
