I have it and lost a remote. From my research you would need a factory remote for your car (meaning a orginal for your car, that works) and then another remote and they can program them. Also Pop a lock can do it as well. If you do not have a orginal remote for your car that already works you will have to get a new system. You would be better off getting a aftermarket alarm with keyless entry.

i've been told to go with aftermarket but i really wanted stock stuff. wish i could get it no matter the cost.

aftermarket is plan b, so a keyless system from another 99 j wouldn't work??

or would it?

You can get stock stuff (if that is what you want). Call the dealer and ask them. Since you do not have your orginal remote they will have to do it.

I have a 2000 and I lost my original remote, to a lawnmower... long story, but I bought two new remotes and took them to the dealer and they programmed them for free. Took about 10 min. Not all of them will do it for free but it shouldn't cost that much.

You got lucky. From what I have been told if I supply the remote they will do it for $80 for each. But they have to have a orginal remote for my car (which I do have one).

Not sure about other models but they told me that I could have up to 4 remotes programmed but they all had to be done at the same time. In fact they said that it is actually the component in the car that gets programmed not really the remotes, which is probably why I didn't need the original. Based on that I think they should only charge you for the programming of the car, regardless of how many remotes you program.

i dunno about GM's but when i worked for ford you had to have just 1 remote to program, its a rip if they charge you tho (which they did). they just cycle the key thru the system a few times and wait for a 'ding' and then you program it.
just get a remote or 2 from ebay ... take it to that dealership and see if you can have them do it for you
if the remotes dont work .. sell em

I might be willing to sell mine. I think I paid $25 each for them about 6 months ago. Now I just shaved my doors and I no longer need the factory remotes. I'd sell them for $15 each pluss shipping.

FedEx quoted $8.58 for shipping, so I'll do two remotes shipped for $38 even. I've got a Paypal account, that's probably easiest but I'll take a money order or check, both would have to clear before I'll ship.
