I'm hoping an import company buys it (as much as I hate imports to an extent) and fixes all the @!#$ they've done wrong since day 1. Make our (future) vehicles actually KEEP their value once you drive it off the lot.

how do you figure it's closing?
it's just restructuring while in bankruptcy, and will come back out as a 'fixed' GM.

some people are misinformed... GM will still be around, they need to fix mistakes they made in the past. The recession hit them like every other company connect that with a credit crisis (no auto loans) and you've got problems.

lol didn't you hear anything and everything with a GM logo on it is closing and locking their doors at midnight tonight and never to be seen or heard from again. All cars ever made by GM will stop running at exactly 12am on the atomic clock.

GM would never do anything to such tight tolerances. It would be 12 midnight plus or minus 20 minutes.

Since GM is publicly traded, it must have growth to function and maintain it's place in the financial market.. Whether that growth is in market share or margin makes little difference. Since North America is most definately in a time of recession, I believe they are simply moving to greener pastures. Bankruptcy would be the smartest, if not most honorable, way to get out of unfavourable contracts and debt in North America and maybe the only way it would make sense to do business here.

Buick is hot in China. Apparently, a "great" emperer used to only drive buicks, so the people recodnize the brand with royalty. I surely never thought of that when driving my Grandmother's 88 century(that think used to ping, so bad!!).

GM Canada's model is apparently working. They manage to charge 20% more than the same vehicle in the US and nobody gets it unless the currencies are at parody. All the while taking hundreds of millions, then hundreds of millions, and now billions from our government. Of course, the working stiff has to drop his pants too.

Imports. Lol. Holding equity in an average vehicle is counter productive. In general, a comparable import cost almost exacly as much more to buy new as the extra you get when you sell it used. So, you are in fact letting the company hold your money in the meantime for the priveledge of sporting their logo. A smarter financial decision would be to bargain down on a warranted domestic vehicle and put the 4-5'g on your morgage instead of an Accord. All things considered, GM's are just as reliable as anything out there. Japanese imports have in general enjoyed a 20% currency advantage over the years. This was purposely done by the Japanese goverment to give their products the edge. Surely a domestic brand could enjoy success in the biggest market with what amounts to a consistent 20% government subsidy. Toyota even sold the Camry at a loss for years, so as to prove to the world it made a better car. This was to repair the image of the rusting heaps they dumped on us in the past. I know, I had one. Imports have a marketing advantage. A closer look will show that GM has in fact given us a smarter choice in almost every segment. It's the loser image they need to get past. Because that's truely why most people chose cars.

I thought GM was making great progress on gaining it's winner image back. There is no question that the younger crowd was turning around with the success of the ecotech. Hopefuly, those younger buyers willl continue to appreciate the brands in the future regardless of a bankruptcy. The ball is really in the hands of the dealers now. It's their turn to turn up the heat on customer service. Even a customer suffering through a lemon can be served well enough to earn that business again. I know a few service advisors that should not be working with the public. I can only imagine how many customers they turned off forever. I have a neighbour that paid big for an Odyssey. Now on it's third tranny, he says nothing bad about it. Go figure.
