I'm looking to upgrade my performance aspect of my car I'm undecided of which route to take. Right now there is a bone stock 2.2L 2200 with 100,000km under the hood. The big three routes I could take are Supercharger, turbo charger, or replace the engine. I'm looking for the best bang for my buck. Not the cheapest but the most power to money spent. I'm leaning more towards the turbo but how well do they work on a 2200? would I be better off getting an ecotec or 2.4 and boosting that instead?

Does anyone even make a supercharger kit for that car?
If you're not going to change the engine, then turbo would probably be the way to go. For under $5k or so, you'll get more power than you would out of putting in an Ecotec or LD9.
In all honesty... if you planned to change the engine it may actually be more cost effective to just trade the car in on a 2003 or something.
well in order to put a turbo on a 2200 you will want to do the internals which is 1000.00 for a rebuild kit about400.00 for a decent turbo also you will want to look at replacing the head with a cast iron or possibly titanium i have watched to many aluminum ones warp also witht the stock head you will be lucky to get 6psi without warping im aiming for 13psi constant so i am rebuilding motor and looking for the titanium head for weight reduction and its resistance to heat the only titanium head i found was 1300.00 in the states
I've heard of several LN2s with turbos with no issues, and have never once heard of anyone using titanium. Hell i've never heard of people using that for cylinder heads PERIOD, in street cars, racing, whatever. Perhaps for parts of the valvetrain, but certainly not for the whole head.
IMHO spending THAT much money on a 2.2 is foolish.

its also whats available around u ....
if u can pick up a good 3400
with low km's on it turn around and port and polish block and head
low comp pistons and get a gt45 turbo ...
u'll be in the 11's if u do it right high 10's if ur lucky
Thanks for the replies guys and doyle if I could weld and custom fabricate metal that would be a very tempting idea. But since I don't have the training or equipment to do so I can't and I believe no one manufactures these parts unless you ask for them to be custom made, that idea is a no go lol.
I have been looking up kits on various websites and on the websites it says you can run 8psi with no engine modifications. which is approx an 80hp gain.

the 2.2 and the 22 can hold low boost levels fairly well, it's all in how you treat it though. .. you could get some more power if you get a secondary head and have it ported and polished and get an extra 5hp or so.
JUST DO A 3400 SWAP. and call it a day
Working on obtainting an M-Class license... ?? Hint: 2 wheels.

Why bother? That engine isn't all that special. Just buy a car that already has one, like an N-body. Cheaper and easier.
3400 = overrated.

Yeah, back in the day doing a V6 swap into a 3rd gen was a big deal, and pretty cool.
These days though, those V6's just can't hold a candle to a boosted 4 and carry along a bunch of extra weight for no good reason.
If you're gonna go to the effort of swapping engines, I think the turbo Ecotec is the way to go.
Thanks again guys, If I were to go the engine swap route it's between a 2.4 and the ecotec depending on which one has better mileage, and price for what it is.

Simple solution.......buy my 99 GT that I have for sale
M62, 42's, ZZP 3", ZZP S3 H/E
214whp 190wtq
Better off purchasing a nicer car and doing it to it. At least that's what I think.
well ..... all in all .... the ecotec i think is a much better motor for your choice ......
newer tech for you to play with .... with the ability to boost up to 250 hp without doing to much work on the motor ..... (not to say u cant do it with the 2.4)
this is the route im going ..... now i need to find a 03 cav thats scrap and take the guts out of it .... ie harness pcm and such .... TRANNY TOO (2200 Currently)
and more ...
its all about how much money u wanna spend and your time frame .... if u want this done asap ....
u wont see those deals as much when u rush then when u take it slow and sorda wait for the parts to come to u .....
Perfect Example ....
im doing the eco swapp come winter or sprind depending on what i have to get still ...
found a ecotec with 130 k on it with a blown ringland ......
100 bucks is what i paid for it .....
now i wait for other deals to come around and pick up on them
swapp sleeves, low compression pistons, eagle rods, and arp studs.
maybe a port and polished head .....
stock turbo manifold from the saab and a garrett turbo ..
shoudl be around the 250 mark @ 7 -10 psi im guessing
but ... like u since i have the 2200 in there and its working fine just getting old ....
i have alot of time to build this engine up get everything ready for it to swapp in and its done in a week end with some friends and a couple of 24's

huh? Titanium head? that would cost several thousand dollar in material and then having it custom made. Alu heads warp with boost? so every cobalt ss s/c, every evo all have waped heads? Only if the motor overheats will that happen.
If you're oncerner over money just but a 2.4 or ecotec car. Cheapest route to more power and the car. Then you could put a gm blower on the car or whatever takes your fancy...
