DSL or Cable?
Wednesday, July 05, 2006 10:35 AM
I know I have to get with the times, and hence this message query

Who is your internet service provider? I've had dial up for the past few years... never really needed anything more than that b/c I do all my internet stuff at work... I rarely ever turn on my home computer.

I'm looking for an ISP that is reasonably fast and cost effective. I don't think I need ultra-high speed considering the amount of usage I get out of the computer.

What do you guys suggest?

go with Rogers High-Speed Light option... its like 29 bucks a month i think...

www.rogers.com

its good for surfing the web, downloading pictures and such... if you want to download music.. its about 3 times faster then dial up...

Don't go with a bell option unless your out in the country where Rogers can not reach... Bell is going down the @!#$ter.. they are blowing up from the inside... if they don't get their act together - i predict they'll be pooched in 5 years time... and their prices will only go up

Rogers just did a huge infrastructure upgrade... i can only see them getting bigger and cheaper.. plus their customer service is amazing

any other questions im sure i can answer... I work with many different service providers... my opinion rogers is one of the best

execulink is pretty good too

rogers also offers a wireless access point (so you aren't confined to the cable wire)... the WAP just sits in your window... if you move your computer to the other side of the house.. just move the WAP with you... you can tie in a wireless router to it too so that you can get more then one computer attatched to the internet..

its their way of making installations easy... no drilling holes to feed new cable through

I would go with DSL

Reason being, without getting too technical, cable internet operates on channel 4. It's common to have a pretty weak signal, and when the signal is too weak, the modem likes to drop offline or just be very slow.

With DSL, all you need is a phone line that works properly and you're always going to have reliable, consistent speed. If you have DSL and it doesn't work all the time, you've got problems with your phone line, either inside your house or in the outside plant...

Maybe i'm biased because I work for Bell though

from experience with both, dsl

my g/f's family has cable and they are always getting emails about going over there download limit and, it goes down about 2-3 times a week

i have never had a problem with dsl, and for some reason this is the only bell service that i have ever had that hasent screwed me, so i am quite happy with it
also i have the highest speed and unlimited d/ls they offer, i heard there basic wasent that great, but then again i have also heard that rogers basic isnt that great, try 1 if you dont like it cancel and try the other

Thanks guys... okay... besides rogers and bell.. how about any other services... for example 3web dsl/cable....cheaper rates and same performance...

Also, how much are you guys paying a month? That info would be nice.

Have Cogeco cable (its basically the rogers version in our area), and I LOVE it. Fastest speeds available - in fact, since I've had it, theyve upgraded in steps from 2mb to 7mb!!! That is just to be able to say that they are the fastest provider around. That is what I call quality service. There are the ODD outages (maybe 3-4 times a year, that last maybe a few hours at most), other than that, its smooth sailing and always fast. Definitely reccommend.

My friend has bell DSL, its a lot slower but other than that its okay.

You can't say that "my uncles aunts brothers friend has DSL and its slower than my cable" lol

it varies by area, and theres different levels of service. light, high speed, ultra etc.

I can say that my bell DSL has not gone down once in over 4 years...Not for even 10 minutes

But in some other areas the DSL could be crap, I would ask neighbours in your particular area and see what they say

Rogers Cable & my download speeds range from 500 kb/s to 2000 kb/sec.

My internet has never gone down *knock on wood*

Margarine is BAD for you, it's the devil.
