COLD weather in Ontario
Sunday, December 19, 2004 5:38 PM
Cold weather is here, and it hit fast. -20's to -30 with windchill warnings in the -30's.
I'd just like to mention some tips for cold weather.
Make sure you have lots of gas in your tanks, it's not good to be near empty, or it could freeze. I donno about you guys, but I'm keeping my car inside the garage overnight. I would plug in your block heaters if you have to keep your car outside.
Make sure you have washer fluid that is for winter, the summer stuff will freeze instantly on the road.
Post any other tips you have for cold weather.

Ya its damn cold out!!!
And I have a tip for everyone.... I learnt the hard way last week...

If it snows or the roads have ice on them and youve got summer tires either get winter tires or take that car off the road!!!

Very good advice! Even if it's sunny out and the roads are bone dry, it can be dangerous driving on summer tires in below-freezing temperatures.

The rubber compound is made for warm weather and will literally freeze up like a hockey puck. Now you're driving on hard plastic instead of rubber and the traction is out the window.

Don't be ignorant of this and think summer tires are fine so long as there's no ice and snow! This is what all-season's are for. All seasons are fine on the dry roads in the winter. Just don't count on them in the ice and snow. That's what winter tires are for.

I'm a little curious now as to what sort of washer fluid I've got. Hopefully it's not a block of ice right now. I can't remember when I last filled it up.

Just plugged in the block heater though so I should be good for the morning.

Hasn't snowed much? Ths snow banks at the end of my driveway are already taller than my car and it's not even Christmas. Normally, I wouldn't have broken out the snow shovel yet.
One more piece of advice. If there's snow on the side of the roads, always be careful of the wind blowing it onto the road.

I'll share a little story that happened to me last night.

I'm coming home from work at around 1:00 am. I'm on a road where the speed limit is 80. I'm doing about 110 as the road is empty and bone dry. No snow or ice or anything.

I'm coming up on this corner which I am familiar with. It's safe to do 100 around the corner without much trouble, as long as the road is dry (which I thought it was).

As I approached the corner, I came across a large drift of snow and ice on the road, only in that one spot. I thought I was screwed.

I hit the snow, pulled up on the ebrake and managed to get around the corner.

I thought the entire road was dry, but by some fluke that one corner was the only spot with snow on it.
This morning my car was doing some very wierd things....my clutch froze, this happen to anyone??, it would only go in about 1/2 way then stop, anyone know why??, I had to let the engine warm up till it worked fine. Then at the same time the service engine light came on for maybe 10 seconds and then went off. AND I have a vibration at speeds over 70km/h, I think its a driveshaft(maybe because I like to spin everywhere I hit ice in a parking lot)
I hate the cold, I'm glad I'm leaving for the Caribbean

vibrations are very common after driving on snowy roads, the rims are probably full of snow, causing the vibration, happens all the time
just make sure that you have a good battery in your car, i have a 1000 CCA battery in my truck, and i never plugged it in this winter , and i live in Kirkland Lake Ont, near Timmins. Caution while driving on roads with summer tires, but all seasons should be fine. I'm from Windsor but go to school here, and i thought my truck wouldn't start but it does. YEs the clutch will be stiff in the cold that has happened to me before. BTW i also have a 93 cavalier back home, so thats why im on here.

Um, is it still snowing where you are? It's been beautiful for weeks and my summer rims and tires have been back on since last weekend.

So what's the issue? What happened??

Re: COLD weather in Ontario
Sunday, April 03, 2005 4:06 PM
i got my first wheel off and car lowered... things were going good... then i move to the rear pass wheel... got the lugs off. car raised... the will WILL NOT COME OFF... i pulled as hard as i could.... it was like bolted on... with no lugs! i thought could have been cause of the cold... took a hair drier to it... no difference... i put the lugs on, thought ill come back to it... go to the other front wheel.. get the tire off... but the coil bolt seems to be stripped or crammed full of crap.. i tried to clean it out... but it seems to still be on the brink of being completely stripped.. so im screwed... today i put my stock wheel back on and am at the winter height..

so im worried i am gonna be screwed.. need to buy a new bolt for the coil.... something always goes wrong!
