Chicago peeps, step in

well, after recent events at work, I'm considering moving over to Chicago.

What info can you guys provide? good places to look for housing? places to stay away from? stuff to do? other things to take into consideration?

why do you or do you not like Chicago?

any input is appreciated.

Darkstars, if I move to chi-town, my first objective is to come kick you in the taint and then go grab some beers

i can only input my driving experience. it was horrible.

if your used to bumper to bumper and idiot drivers who have absolutely zero consideration for the other motorists on the road then you should be fine. just learn how to use your middle finger real well if your not used to it!

ohhh and the toll roads are @!#$ joke. literally one every 5-10 miles on one of the interstates i went on...

The weather is either piercing hot and humid . Or terribly cold and crappy.

My mortgage for a townhome with assesments 50 miles southwest of chicago is 1500 a month.

Taxes are terrible.

Cost of living is high

Wages are good only because of the above two reasons.

Traffic is horrible

Job market is actually good though. If you consider some other locations around the country chicago is in alot better situation right now. But it depends on what you do for a living...

The Lake is fun as hell and there is a ton of stuff to do. It is a great city and very clean for a large scale city... There are not alot of bums I work downtown everyday. Affordable living is all over but the question is who do you like to live with. Chicago has very distinct ethnic neighborhoods itself and the suburbs are the fallout of everything. A little bit of everything depending on where you go. I like it out southwest because it is still wide open and not developed to the point you can't get anywhere... I pay high taxes but there is absolutely no crime where I live and alot of good people out here.

I hope this helped somewhat...

one thing I will add is personally I'd recommend going a bit north of Chicago or even a bit west. The whole state basically turns to cornfield if you go a bit south. When your a little north (Lake County) the taxes are less (I pay 10+% sales tax even on food because I'm in Cook County, same as Chicago) the housing market is alot cheaper. Chicago isn't to far to commute. And your not in the middle of nowhere. Your 1/2 hour from down town (if traffic isn't trying to bend you over), your about an hour from down town Milwaukee, you even have Six flags maybe 15-20 miles away. I doesn't get to hot here, this past summer there was only 2-3 days over 95 and it never cracked 100. The humidity can definetly get bad. Winter does get cold but seeing as your from New York area it wont be anything new.

Tolls aren't a problem at all. You get an i-pass and you don't have to stop just slow down to 55mph and you get charged 1/2 price. There's definetly bums LOL but I've never ran into an aggressive one, they don't really bother you much.

All in all, I love being close but I would NEVER live IN Chicago, just outside works fine for me.

i live 2 hrs from taint man above... and i like out here haha. jobs are plentiful, my neighbor is 1/8 mile away. i get to light stuff on fire and blow stuff up. and all that jazz. i dislike the chicago traffic and the 5000 roads you have to take and merge to and dip dodge dive and duck to get to where you are going while paying 16.5 tolls on the way and gas being $2 more in the city regardless. its awesome. good luck. now is the time to do it...

Milwaukee's better! Brew City is where its at!

I work just north of Milwaukee and have a coworker that makes the commute from near Taint man's place. Traffics only bad for him near the Chicago area and right at the WI/IL border (cops LOVE to sit on the Interstate there). I'd suggest just north of Chicago, then you have the possibilities of work in both the Chicago area and Milwaukee Area. What field are you in?

Despite the traffic, the weather, the bums and all the other stuff, i love chicago. I live in the northwest side of the city.

You can actually find affordable housing and peace troughtout the chicago metro area. You just have to look for it!

Do your research before moving. Come visit and just drive around town so you can get the feeling of the city.

Being from NY im sure you are used to all the bad characteristics listed above.

Move near a rail line that runs to Chicago and you'll be fine. I'm 5 minutes walking to the train and can get into and out of the city with no traffic headaches for under $10 during the week and $5 for unlimited rides on the weekend. Metra actually does rock!

Definitely stay at least 50-60 miles out of Chicago though. The further away you go the cheaper @!#$ gets. I'm considering moving to the south suburbs around Joliet, Kankakee or Bourbonnais. A ways out but hella cheap, other than Joliet.

^^^

He's right, the races are awesome. The main appeal of Chicago is watching a bunch of tools drag race down the street.
