It really depends on the county but I know for a fact they are Illegal in both IL and MO having been pulled over in IL and seeing someone being pulled over in MO for it.

dude they are perfectly legal in MO. In KC area. They are legal if the police cannot see the bulbs themselves. The glow is totally legal, just cant have visible bulbs in MO
I,ve been pulled over for millions of things in Illinois...and one of them happened to be underbody neons (left them on by mistake). And yes they are crazy illegal and cops get really weird about those things.......
I have heard there is a "street legal" kit coming out soon by a underglow company. (i believe plamaglow but don't quote me on that)......and it will be a full colored LED kit.....but there is a switch that turns into street legal mode....where the front tube turns White, side tubes turn amber and the rear tube turn red.
THis seems legit and might work.....but for me i gotta keep my noise clean cause the tickets i,m getting are expensive...lol

AGAIN, I said it depends on what county you’re in. I've seen someone pulled over in south county St. Louis for underbody neon’s, so I know in some areas of MO they are Illegal to drive with on.

i had my red undercar neons tapped into my brake lights. I have been pulled over in IL for my neons. The cop told me that red and blue are highly illegal. for the simple fact that they are "special vehical" indicators. He told me that orange, yellow, green, purple, pink, white, are all ok to have. Since this was a state trooper i believe what he said.

OK, I believe you are in the QC area. The deal in both RI and Scott Counties is that they are legal to have, and legal to turn on when your car is not moving. If you are on a road (to include at stoplights) you cannot have them on, period. I got pulled over by a cop in Moline for it, and he told me that they "cause a distraction to other drivers". The only reason I got off of the ticket is that I was on leave from Iraq.

Orange isn't legal in St. Clair County...that's what I got pulled over for.

hmmmm I talked to my friend who is a cop. and he said that neons are and aren't illegal in IL. He said that you aren't suppost to have them... along with things hanging from your rear view mirror, driver side tints, smoked and colored "L" plate covers. He said that you can have them and get away with them if you aren't stupid about them LIKE RED AND BLUE COLORS. He also told me that you are highly likely to get pulled over for them if you have a loud exhaust, or a loud stereo, or drive like an @!#$ to catch their attention. and to throw in my two cents how the hell can you see the bulb and claim they are a destraction when they are under the car... and maybe if people spent more time looking infront of them and not trying to look under your car it wouldn't be a distraction.

Well i heard the purple and green neons are legal from someone . . . . .but as for tints Meancav.
When i got takin in, in Chicago, i asked the cop about tints and the police officer said tints are ILLEGAL on the front and driver and passenger window. Then i said what about the lightest level tint and he said it doesn't matter any tint is illegal on those windows. So
HMMM..... We all keep getting different answers.

Once again, as it has been said several times in this thread: Different counties, cities, states, etc. have different ordinances. As well, there are alot of Officers of the Law who really dont know the rules, but arent going to look stupid in front of John Q. Public, so they just talk out of their arses. Fact of life. If you really want to know what is and is not legal where you live, then find a way to get ahold of the regulations put forth in your area. All laws are considered public record, and are therefore available for the public to view. My suggestion would be to go to your nearest county court house. They should have a copy of all local/state/national laws that are applied to whatever situation you would like to know.

I think you can have them.. you just can't be on a public road and moving with them on... at least that how I always understood it when I had them... so I would just put them on when I parked..
Spend the money on something else, though, because underbodies are junk.

That is correct. The tint law is for sure, no tint on the front drivers side or passenger side. And as dark as you want on the back windows for IL. At least that is what it was up to last year. I dont ever remember them changing it, so I assume it is still the same. Sport compact car had an article on it a couple of years ago, for every state, as well as exhaust laws, lowering laws, etc. and had websites for each state printed in it to show their sources. I dont remember if I saved that copy or not.
Hey Andix, if you still got it, post up the sites on here so we can all be informed...that would be great

In IA, the law states that no blue/red/white can be displayed except white on the front, white reverse, and normal colors. Amber side markers for turn signals are legal.
UNDERBODY - Strobing is very controversal as there is not a set law saying yes or no, but you could get a distraction ticket for having them bounce with music.
COLOR wise, hide the bulbs, and any color besides blue/red/white is legal. If you get pulled over for it do a little research at the library in the books, take it to court and smile as you walk away.
