I posted this in maintenace but no one responded, found all the gauge topics in performace, so maybe you all can help.... i installed the Sunpro 3 pod guages, did everything right...Volt, Water Temp, Oil Pressure.
After few hours of putting it together and returning a stripped one, i started the car and i had a very bad misfire, idling like 1500 bouncing, i give it gas and it struggles.....
To someone who knows more about these cars, I fixed it by plugging the FACTORY oil pressure sensor and water temp back into their harnesses and just let them hang around the engine bay, started it up and it seemed to miss for a little but definitely not as bad. Took it for a ride around, I revved it a few times and no more miss, got on it hard and pulled like it always did....also it seems to idle a bit higher and smell like it runs a tiny bit rich
My 3 questions are
1. Would having those 2 sensors unplugged really cause a misfire that bad? Or you think it was because i was running 1/8 tank gas and had the car jacked on an angle for a while?
2. Would having the factory water temp sensor just hanging in the engine bay cause a higher idle? normal would be 925-950...now its about 975-1000....not much difference but its something i noticed...would it make me run rich like the ecu thinks the engine is still cold start? or is it safe to just leave? factory guage reads all the way cold, sunpro reads ~200degrees...Now, tomrw i'm going to put a T fitting for the water temp sensor so my stock gauge reads right (mainly so my radiator fan will come on)...but i am wondering if it affects anything other than rad fan
3. What should normal oil pressure be? (warm engine mine idles at 25psi and when i touch the gas it goes up slowly, flooring it high rpms it goes to 65psi........cold engine is 65psi....seem normal?
4.Is it OK to leave the stock oil pressure sensor plugging into the harness, just not into the block?? will that change anything besides there being no oil light on the dash?
thanks.
why did u unplug any of them anyways...ad new senders for sensors, dont replace stock ones. ur car reads thsoe sensors to determine a lot of things. ur car was probably saying F U the entire time.
replace all stock senders/sensors, and properly install aftermarket ones, and u shouldnt have any problems.
Oil pressure and engine temps sound fine to me. But here's some things.
You NEED to have that CTS in the engine. The computer uses it to determine if the engine is warmed up and thus run in closed loop. If it doesn't run like @!#$ with the thing out, then your MPG will suffer quite a bit. And it'll keep your idle up some, because it thinks the engine is way cold all the time. If the sunpro gauge will read a GM CTS, then I would say to go with the 3-wire sensor and a pigtail, and tap your ECU wiring and gauge wiring into it. If it wont, guess you'll be drilling/tapping the head to put your new sensor in for the gauge.
Oil pressure sensor. That sending unit needs to be hooked up. I'm pretty sure even on the 95's that the oil pressure sending unit is part of the wiring to the fuel pump. A lot of newer cars will, when seeing a loss of oil pressure, shut off the fuel pump. And after a startup, if it does not see oil pressure within a certain amount of time, will shut off the fuel pump. For this guage, you'll need some extra fittings and such to be able to hook both sending units up.
Both of these being not present on the car will probably make it run like total @!#$, so I'd advise leaving them in where they're supposed to go so that the car continues to run like it should.
i find it amusing that SHOoff has nothing better to do but follow me around & be an unhelpful dick in even cross-forum. - Jon Mick

Well here's the thing...even though the Oil pressure sensor is plugged into the harness, i still do not have an oil light on the dash so i am thinking maybe the threads on the sensor are a ground for it maybe? but yes i did read it's part of the fuel pump wiring so that's probably why it ran terrible wit it unplugged.
The coolant temp sensor, i am going to get a T fitting/bracket(idk what the name) and basically plug both sensors through the one already drilled/tapped hole, i see no problem with that. My idle does seem a bit higher, and the engine runs Ok, it does seem different but id say if someone never drove the car before i did this, they wouldnt know so it's not that bad.
So im going to fix the CTS, which i think will fix my idle and running wierd, IMO i think it's ok to leave the Oil pressure switch plugged into the harness but not into the block(just hanging from the wire) <-- that's basically my concern now if it's ok to leave. I have driven the car plnety of times, maybe 50 miles ish no CEL yet, no fuel pump shutting off
one more thing..million questions sorry...my oil pressure is 20 at idle, 50 cruising and 65 at high rpms, that sound about right? i didnt know it was supposed to move around that much
I put a T fitting for both Temp sensors and when i drive, both gauges stay at 160 degrees, when i idle is comes up to normal but VERY slowly...gonna say that's because its not in the way of flowing coolant....is there any way to fix this?
