What's MadJack Up To Now?

Uh-oh! What's this?

Ignore the messy garage, I'm still cleaning out the junk!

This is after I cleaned the engine bay up. Hey the car only has 289k miles!

Well, after a year and a half, I'm finally getting down to installing the cam and head on this thing!

This is the head I've written about previously. Mainly about the incompetent machine shops here in slOcala. The machine shop here in town had the head for a month and a half, giving me one excuse after another on how they couldn't get the head done. I missed last year's Florida J-Body Meet, track night because of this. Finally they said they couldn't get a pilot for the spring seat cutter (this coming from a shop that supposedly does a lot of Dirt Late Model motors, YEAH, RIGHT!) They also said that the springs would be fine without machining the seats (I know how to do the math, I would have bound the springs up while setting the lifter pre-load). I found a little hole in the wall shop up in Gainesville (not far from the raceway) who said if he didn't have the pilot, he would make one, which he did and he verified my math to be correct. He got it done in less than a week and for less than the local shop. I checked the work, it was done correctly.

The cam is a custom regrind from Jones' Cam Design. He was able to tighten up the lobe centers, (even more than I thought would work on a fuel injected motor) and add a little more duration (to both intake and added a few degrees more to the exhaust) and a bunch more lift! That's why I needed the springs to be in correctly. Crane (old Crane) left the stock lobe centers and did a single pattern design. While the cam did better than stock, it did give a slight lope to the idle and a little more mid to top end, the response was still flat and left a lot to be desired. This new cam should have a choppy idle (the reason I swapped to a '97 PCM, Higgins! ) and a ton more mid to upper range.

I will also be doing the LS6/LN2 hybrid lifter conversion, installing all new gaskets and timing set. Later after doing the 2 1/2" exhaust and header merge collector, I still need more top end, Ill install a 4* offset crank key and retard the cam.

It will probably be a week or two by the time I get it done, but I am FINALLY doing it!

that's the problem. It's not the photographer's fault. Bigfoot is blurry. And that's extra

I've waited for this for a long time. Even though Im a quad/twin cam guy I can wait to see the results to this. A OHV build may be in my future.

Sorry, I haven't had time to work on it since I pulled it Friday, Holiday, family, house work, teenager (Me: and her: (<oh, no that's her mother) , etc, etc, etc...

I should be able to do some work this week, with pictures.

Got the head and lifters pulled tonight, aside from normal wear and tear, everything looks good. What I expected from a motor with 96k miles. Moderate amount of carbon in the chambers, but not too excessive. It was running rich, without a tune. Had a moderate amount of carbon in the intake runners, between the wide lobe separation angles and the EGR, I'm sure that is where it came from.

You swapped to speed density? This is one of the few situations where that might actually hurt rather than help (the other being itb's), If its got a super choppy idle you might have weird vac fluctuations at idle and low rpm that will reak havoc with a speed density tune.

No, I'm still on the stock tune and will be staying Alpha-N. When I changed from the '96 to the '97 PCM, that was to get the ability to tune. Both years were Alpha-N on the 2.2L,it is just that the '96 was a one year only system and isn't supported by HP Tuners.

Boy... You'd figure that in a own that's home to "Big Daddy" Don, former Top-fuel champ, that you'd might find a reputable shop to do machine-work.

Go beyond the "bolt-on".

Just to update you, I'm still here. I've been busy with many things, ranging from work, family, classes, illness, etc...

I started in on the lifters tonight, snapping plenty of pictures, look for a detailed write-up on the LN2/LS6 lifter mod as soon as I can get time to do it.

fantastic choice on the cam grinder Mike Jones has done a ton of cams for me ranging from a mild street grind, to dirt late model engines, to the turbo LSX that is in my truck!

I had read an article about him in Circle Track Magazine, so I started looking into him. Around the same time I had a couple of friends (a circle track racer and a drag racer) recommend him to me. So I called him and he came up with a regrind for me. I t had about the same amount of lift and roughly the same duration, but he tightened up the lobe centers a little more than I would have, but reassured me that with tuning it would be fine, so I went with it. Now I can't wait to finish it up! I want to hear this thing run!
