MSD 2.3L ???
Monday, December 20, 2010 11:57 AM
Im a bit of a Newbie when it comes to Cavaliers. I have a 95 2.3L Quad 4.

Anyway, my question is.. If i want to swap out the stock coils with MSD 8224's, can i still use my ICM or do i need to get the 2.2 ICM? If i have to get the 2.2 ICM, what is the difference between the two? or does the 2.2 ICM just perform better than the 2.3/2.4 ICM?

Thanks

It goes alot deeper than that:

The popular ignition mod for the Quad4 is to replace the coils hidden under the dress-cover atop the engine... and eliminate the cover itself... with the ICM/coil assembly from the LN2.Why? Those under-cover coils are prone to heat-soak, which effects their performance (Output). Not to mention how it cuts the life of the coils short.

By extending the wires leading to the ICM by using the pieces found on the LN2 for it's ICM (Plugs too!) the coils may be relocated away from that heat-prone area. Plus, the LN2 coils have much higher output than the Quad4 do.

And it allows you the option of installing an MSD DIS-2 multi-strike capacitive-discharge ignition controller, which greatly eases start-up, improves mileage & helps tame engines that are unruly due to ignition-related short-comings.

BTW: the MSD #8224 coils don't directly swap with the Quad4's.

Go beyond the "bolt-on".

you dont need the 2.2 icm. keep your 2.3 icm, keep the cover, get the msd coils and the coil adaptors and it makes it a VERY simple wire up.
you can get rid of the coils and housing under the cover, due to cost of it i suggest donating it to someone that needs it.
