Sorry, but quick WAI question.
Thursday, October 28, 2010 4:35 PM
Hey everyone. I just bought a Yellow 2003 cavalier 5 speed. Its in pretty good shape and its pretty agile compared to my last car. I want to put in a intake on the car. I'm just wondering if the wai intake will have provisions for the sensors on the current factory airbox. They don't mention it on the intake sites. Not planning to go crazy on mods or anything, but I would rather just clean the filter instead of changing it every other oil change. Starting to really like the car, I didn't think I would like the looks of the 03 front end, but the car is really growing on me. The car has black 17 inch 10 spoke american racing wheels on it. No pictures yet tho. Thanks in advance for the intake question.

you can always just do a K&N drop in filter and remove the intake resonator in the fender.. depends on what intake your looking at, i have a rksport wai and it has the correct holes for the sensors and looks good with a little paint

my intake came with the car and i cant seem to find it
but you can order one on ebay for 40-50 bucks although i would suggest replacing the filter with a K&N cone filter

cheaper and same design and painted, available in red, black and blue

the filter can be found in most parts stores. i know they say for a 2.4 but it would fit the ecotec the same

I just checked the ebay lines. They are for the 2.4 engines, I just bought an 03 ecotec. Do you know any links for the 03-05 wai?

I got a 2.4 intake on my eco. also replaced the filter for a K&N. Like fluffy said, they fit the same.

Do those 2.4 intakes come with opening for the air sensors too

Yes, but there is no where on the 2.4 intake for a vacuum line to hook to it like the stock eco intake does, so when installing it, all you have to do is attach the vacuum line to the intake manifold, there are two ports on the manifold to the right of the throttle body. Here is a pic of what I'm talking about. (the ports are circled in red)

I don't think the FPR is supposed to see full manifold vacuum, but I could be wrong.

it is, it gets vacuum at idle so it can do its job lol....

It hooks up to the Eco intake BEFORE the throttle body.... where their isn't manifold vacuum at idle

why does aem hve you place it there with their intake system, and why the hell would you want the fpr to take fuel when your flooring it??

Because AEM didn't design the car or the fuel system, all they did was sell you an over priced pipe with a sticker on it and a new air filter. Your also assuming you know how an Eco FPR regulator works.

My filter is a E-1006 I picked up from Advanced Auto. Here it is on K&N's site

Maybe I will just get a drop in filter and maybe modify the stock set up so it is less restrictive. Or I can modify the intake from ebay so that the fpr get vacuum before the throttle body.

how does it work then

Well seeing as the GM, the people who designed and engineered the car, hooked up the line pre throttle body I would think it works opposite of conventional. At idle you wont have any vacuum on that line. When you go full throttle you would get a vaccum on that line. Take a water bottle half full and and blow compressed air sideway across the opening, it will cause a vacuum in the water bottle and start to pull some of the water out. It's the same theory being applied, you gat airflow through the intake pipe and it will cause a negative pressure in that line.

So by attaching that line to the manifold you've effectively lowered your fuel pressure under full throttle.
