Is my base 2003 Cavalier stock?
Saturday, October 23, 2010 3:25 PM
My wife and I bought a 2003 base Cavalier sedan with an automatic. Have no idea who has owned the car during it's lifetime with the exception of the lady who sold us the car, and I know she did nothing but drive it back and forth to the local Metrolink once a week. Anyway, this thing lays a scratch (More of a chirp) in 2nd gear? I drove a gen 1 or 2 when looking to buy a car years ago, actually 91 to be exact because I bought a Mustang GT instead, but I almost bought that cav. was surprised how fast it was, but don't think it was as fast as this 2003 I have, and the one I drove was a stick to boot! Any6 thoughts on if someone has done something to it, and what that something might be? looks perfectly stock to me. Thanks for any replies.

stock, I could get it to wheel hop like a bastard stock shifting 1-2 (tis a stick) even on the Dunlop Direzza Z1 Star Specs (3rd stickies street tire, behind the Bridgestone RE11 and the Toyo R1R).

Yeah, I thought it was probably stock as I have cheapo tires on the car, and they probably lose grip easily. When I had money, I bought the best, had a 91 Mustang GT, and figured if Goodyear GSC's where good enough for the stock Corvette to come supplied with, they should be good enough for my GT. I had allways bought Gatorbacks for it, but the GSC's did make a difference. Stuck like glue wet or dry whereas the Gatorbacks were more of a summer tire. Probably aging myself, havn't had the inclination to look into high perf tires as I can't afford them now, but i'm sure some day, hopefully soon, I will be looking at the current top of the line rubber, or at least inbetween. Back in 91 the Goodyear Gatorbacks or GSC's set me back $800, (set of 4) and that was on 17" rims lol. Had a flat recently on the Cav, and the cheapest tire I could find was $80 installed. Seems rubber has increased in value, used to be able to get a generic tire for $25-35 bucks I may just keep my eye out for some decent ruber at a used tire place.

Chances are that it is stock, with cheap tires, and a bad IAT sensor. The IAT sensor has a tendancy to make for a harsh upshift, mostly noticeable on the 1-2 shift.

Also, new trans fluid/filter would probably be good for it.
