lol, do you have an intake? Is your car boosted?

Fluff this reminds me of Kims friend with the Solstice:
"Why does my car make this noise, I think its broken"

"Um dudethats a turbo in your car"

I'm assuming that it's the noise that a 2.2 OHV makes. Most likely due to the fact that a 2.2 car doesn't have a resonator in that factory exhaust pipe like the 2.4 does.

I have a good idea what he's talking about. I used to hear it all the time, but never thought it was any sort of issue. Come to think of it, it might just be the whole OHV engine thing. Cuz i'm pretty sure the 3400 makes that sound on me too, though it's quite a bit different sounding on a V6.

My car sounds like a 500whp monster when i shift with the pops and crackles it makes, but it really isnt. Which depresses me....

Me too. The backfire sounds pretty awesome. I love the looks on people's faces when they hear it coming and get all excited, but then realize it's just a cavalier that probably puts down double digit HP numbers to the wheels.

I noticed a strange noise when I would let off the gas and slow down in gear.

Turned out to be one of my A-arm bolts backed out and was letting the a-arm vibrate making a horrible noise.

Tightened it up and it went away.

backed out again, put loktite on it, tightened it, torqued it and it went away.

...it backed out again, same routine.

OP, check your a-arm bolts (the ones that go in from the front of the car) if that isn't the noise you're talking about (since your description is so vague) then I honestly have no idea wtf you're talking about.

it comes from the exhaust. and mine pops and cackles like crazy. especially when it is cold out or my engine hasnt warmed up. i think all the 2.2 ohv cavaliers do it.

That's just the unburned fuel in the pipe, reacting to the sudden change in pressure in the exhaust-system when the TB was closed. That fuel needs air & heat to burn, and it's gotta come from somewhere... so it reacts with the air that, in that situation, is drawn into the exhaust from at the tailpipe. It's quite common, actually... Especially when the engine is running rich, like when it's in open-loop mode or when it's cold outside.

True, a resonator would help. Seeing how small the total area the muffler is on J-cars, adding to it in some non-restrictive fashion would be beneficial... Just so long as it doesn't hurt the flow of exhaust in any way. Read David Vizard's article on exhaust building in Popular Hot-Rodding Magazine to see what I mean.
