Quick/cheap performance?

Is there anything that I can get for a low price (under $500) that will increase performance? I have a Weapon R cold air intake, full 2.5 straight thru exhaust, and really thats it. I ran a NX nitro kit for wet 150 shot for almost 2 years and did fine... just looking for more of a motor gain.

Have you done a header swap? If not look into the PaceSetter Armor Coat Header.
Do you still have the stock Cat? Look into Thunderbolt Spin Cat.

Do you have a Dyno shop that has HP Tuners near by? Get it dyno tuned. This will only net small gains on a stock motor or one with bolt ons only, but gains non-the-less.

Can you pull you engine and do work to it?

Look into an aftermarket 1.6 full roller rocker arm swap. Not a great gain, but some gain, more from the rocker arm ratio accuracy, the stockers are notoriously inaccurate. They've been measured to 1.54:1 by another member.

Another option to look into zero decking the block, surface the head. This will require custom pushrods and adjustable rocker arms (see above), due to the deck height change. This will increase the compression ratio. Depending upon what the machine shop says, you may need new pistons and/or rings (TotalSeal Rings or C&A ZGS?). You will at a minimum you will need bearing, gaskets and head bolts/studs(whenever you pull the head ALWAYS replace the head bolts! if you convert to studs, they can be reused.). Yeah, this could be a total rebuild, but if you do your own assembly work, you could keep it under $500.

If you shop around it is possible to find a shop that can do a port & polish on the head for less than $500. Remember this will require a head gasket set and head bolts.

You could do a cam regrind. They usually cost about $150, plus the price of gaskets and head bolts. This will require pulling the engine to get the cam in and out.

Have you changed your timing set? If you do, you can get the Mr. Gasket #985G 2* Offset Crank Key and retard the cam two degrees. This will shift the power band up a few rpm, for a little more top end power.

If it's a daily driver, you may want to get an engine from a salvage yard and build it up , then install the built motor over a weekend.

The more you can do, the less expensive it can be, if you know what your doing. If you're not sure of what your doing find someone to help. Be forewarned, if some of this work is done wrong, you can ruin the motor.
