ive looked online everywhere to see if anyone had a similair problem but i havent found anything. there is a loud ticking noise coming from my head, can barely hear it when motor is cold but get very very loud when hot. used to only do it when there was no load on engine but now almost all the time. it does it the loudest when there is very little load on the engine. example, 2800rpm cruising in 3rd or 4th. it is coming from the head no doubt. when you just rev it up it is veryyyyyyy loud. i feel like it is a valve spring but it has gotten worse so im not to sure any more. it has been making this tick for about 15,000 miles now

my cavalier with the 2200SFI motor and my Cobalt 2.4l Ecotec SS/NA both tick very, very loudly. GM tells me its normal.
try to post a video of it if you can.
maybe if i find a working camera around here, i can post up mine, and compare.
but GM tells me its normal on both cars. they said on the cavalier its your spark plugs sparking loud.
but its normal. on the cobalt, i forgot what they told me, but they said it was totally normal.

OP: Could be a lifter. Are you sure its in the top end?
positive its top end. it is a changing sound to like sometimes it will make a different pitch than usual. i think it could be a broken spring. it is a toyota 2.0 dohc motor. and i just realized i should have posted this in off topics or something

i would check the exhaust manifold and verify it isnt leaking

Im thinking if its a broken spring you would be hearing some worse noises.
Granted its a different engine but when a valve spring broke in the 305 that used to be in my truck there was a rattle noise in the valve cover and a miss along with a lack of power because the one valve was open allowing no cylinder pressure.

Funny thing about the LN2 (2200): Lifter noise is a common occurrence. Very odd considering that the oiling-priority is on the lifters. (I've seen the cross-section)
For some reason the galley that feeds them tends to trap air in it as the system bleeds-down overnight. This air gets displaced into the lifter at start-up, and it ticks for awhile until it's displaced with oil. GM tried to remedy this on the '98-later engine, by placing an orifice in the forward plug in the galley found behind the timing-chain. GM claims this is done to extend chain-set life--which it does, to a degree... And is needed on the RWD-app version because of differences of oil-pan sump location--but I think it was namely done as a band-aid (Cheap & easy fix) for this preexisting & ongoing problem.
WARNING: Being starved of oil, even briefly, in a repeated fashion will eventually lead to lifter failure. (Duh!) Don't be surprised by a possible failure (Lifter collapse) at around as little as 160k-mi, like I've had. Of course, mind you, the reason for my failure was partially due to the fact that the chain broke due to improper lubrication (Remember what I just said?) and it being replaced by the previous owned mechanic... Who failed to remove the broken pieces from the oil-pan! The oil-sump caught a few of those frags & guess where it fed them...? Talk about hard-lessons.
