what did you use for the 9/16"x2" sleeve? my machinst needs this piece and wants to know what to use.

not sure for what you need this but on my 2 engine with pump swap i didn't use any sleeve....

I had a piece of steel tubing lathed down...it's been about 4 years, though, so I don't remember the exact size, but I do know the OD and ID were slightly larger than NY-Jbodies suggested...sorry

Is the sleeve really needed? shouldnt the block offer enough support or is possible that the walls are too thin where the hole is drilled?

there are three specific ways to do the 2.3 oil pump swap that i know of...

1.) cut the side off and drill into the oil passage and connect the two holes.
2.) sleeve the stock hole over to the oil passage (is this what you mean?)
3.) weld fitings and pipe onto the oil pump and direct it over to the LD9 oil feed hole.

as far as the sleeve itself, i wouldnt know as my machinist did that part but i cant imagine it being too difficult to figure out... whats the problem exactly?

I feel like taking a tinkle on an ecNOtec...

2.4L TC Block Modifications (These need to be done by a qualified machinist)

The oil passages to the pump must be re-machined to match the 2.3L pump. This operation must be done with the engine apart since it will require thorough cleaning when finished. Make a template from the right side of the oil pump that includes the bolt holes, oil passage and dowel pin holes. Lay it over the bolt hole on the block and carefully center and indicate the large oil hole center. This hole must be started and then drilled at an angle to intersect the horizontal oil passage that runs below it on the block. If you look from the back side of the block you will see where the passage pipe plug comes out. Draw a line on center with it and the hole center punch you have indicated and that is the angle the hole must be drilled. Drill the hole small and then increase drill sizes up to 9/16”. You will break through the casting and then drill into the oil passage casting. Make sure the final drill with the 9/16” bit is done slowly and smoothly, since you have to install the 2”x9/16” sleeve afterwards. Cool the sleeve and coat it with sealant. Gently tap it into the hole until it is flush with the block deck. Remove the oil galley plug to clean the passage and make sure the sleeve does not protrude into the oil passage bore.
this is what im talking about.

So exactly how many ways are there to do this oil pump swap because ive been reading and reading and apparently theres a few ways to do it. the information ive been using is from the write up that geforce_z22 did that says it got stickied so i assumed this is what everyone else was going by and now im starting to have doubts about it......

This is the original/NY-Jbody way of doing the 2.3L swap. It's a straight-shot, where you break out of the casting, and then back into the casting at the oil galley. Like I said, we used a piece of steel tubing lathed down, but we did all of the drilling with a hand drill (takes a very steady hand and a great deal of patience...also helps to have a spotter while drilling). The way we did it, was to only drill straight through the oil galley with a drill bit about the size of the ID, and counterbore with a bit about the size of the OD of the sleeve.

There was another way that was brought up, where you drill straight down at the oil pump outlet, cut the edge of the block at an angle and then drill straight through to the oil passage, intersecting the hole you drilled straight down, then tap and plug the angle cut hole. This is suppose to avoid breaking out of the casting. There are a bunch of pictures in detail of this method floating around JBO. Because of that, I assumed this is the way everyone does it now. I probably still have them in an email if you choose to go this route.

ok i figured out the problem, and for the record the write up DOES NOT match the pictures listed with it. If you read that paragraph i posted above and look at the pics they do the exact opposite. write up tells you to drill at angles and you need a sleeve to connect the new oil pump feed tube to the factory oil feed. the pics show drilling at an angle to avoid using the sleeve. i think someone should correct this error to avoid confusion for others in the future...

The write up is correct.

There are two (2) different sets of instructions there.

The first way I don't think I've ever seen done.

The second set of instructions goes along with the pics and (as far I'm concerned and I've done 4) is the easiest, fastest and safest way to do this swap.
