Racetronix pump?
Friday, August 27, 2010 2:38 PM
I am needing a fuel pump in the 99 sunfire before I bring it back out. Just wanting to know how everyone is doing with the racetronix pumps in the j-bodys. I did a search and seen racetronix said to use the w-body pump as it is cheaper. Then seen where it was mentioned it may be a drop in with no mods really. Can anyone say for sure it is?

Also what is the deal with the 99's fuel pumps? Is it really split production? As I need a fuel level sensor also. Hasn't worked for a few years. In which I see gmpartsdirect has a sensor for the 99 for like 86 bux's. Anyone know if the 99 sensor is actually removable? So I could order it before pulling the tank.

Also the 2.4 swap I did in it is starting to rack up miles. 150k to be exact where when it blows I will swap the 3.8 Sc in it. Anyone running the pump on something like. Care to say how it is doing. Other wise thanks for any help.

I seen the post where he said that it was plug and play. As far as mods he never said. As in modding the bucket. Heck the f-body pump is more so plug and play. That wasn't my ?

Also I know it works. The f-body pump works also. Maybe I should clarify my ? more. I run racetronix pumps in the ta. Where they are only rebadged walbro's. I've had two of them in the na trans am just die. Along with have fuel cut out issues.

Can someone tell me if the fuel level sensor is replaceable on the 99s or not at least. Mine has the metal gas tank also if that would help. If it would it would save time from picking up a used assembly.

Is your fuel sending unit like the fbodies, my 99 one is. Most people that burned up the pump never primed them ......
The wbody should be 100% plug n play. The fbody is also really close to drop in on stock 99s. I only had to cut one very little rubber tab. My cup was rubber just like the fbodies.

The wbody pump is a 100% drop in, no grinding of any kind. Only modification that is needed is to the wiring, but you do that with the fbody pump too, repin 2 wires, thats it.

Md I was waiting for you to reply. As for the sending unit I have no idea. The sunfire has been parked for awhile now. About 8 months. I took it to va a few months back. To where it now doesn't want to start. When it does it acts like it isn't getting fuel. Have to keep reving it up for about 30 secs. Then it just comes to life. Also when starting it up in the driveway and pulling out. I get like 10 feet and it just dies. Let off the gas and give it gas again and runs fine.

It is also not pulling really past 4k. Go back 4 years when I got the car with the gas gauge messed up. The girls b/f dumped a crap load of water in the tank. Due to them breaking up. Everytime I change the filter black crap just poors out. I've been putting off changing the pump till now. I sold my dd na trans am last week. So I need to get this thing going. I have yet to drop the tank though.
So I really have no idea.

Md I seen you were going to swap tanks to a plastic one. Being that I know there is water in it. And I can get a tank from like a 03-05 sunfire for 50buxs with the pump. Is it a drop in. Also will the gas gauge work right? Over the years I have seen 96-99 sending units are the same. Then 00-05 is the same... After doing searching last night I have no idea what is right. I pm'd the sponsor guy that is running pj's plastic tank in his 99 but have yet to hear anything.

On top of that I need to put 2 tires on the front, cv axles, tranny mounts and a few other goodies. I also need to get the pcm reflashed for a 99 to get rid of my egr code. Get a o2 sim. Then fix my ball and socket leak at the header. That or get someone to tune it with hptuners that is close to moorefield, wv.

Probably be the better route. As it has a 2.3 ho intake, tb, cold air intake, 4-1 header, 2.5 exhaust all the way back to a f-body muffler.

Also I forgot about the burning up pumps. My na trans am burned up two with in a month. Of course racetronix replaced them. It wasn't the priming as the lasted about 2 weeks. The one that is in it now is still going after 6 months. Not sure what the deal was.

In my other trans am with the 383 and procharger. Is the one with fuel cut issues. It is a older pump. By a good few years. To be honest I don't think it has the fitting on the top. I could be wrong though. It might have something to do with hooking and the fuel sloshing but unlikely.

Yes the fuel level sensor can be removed .. on the side of the cup that it mounts to its held on by a little clip/ lever / tab thing and then just slides up and out of the slides
Here is pic hope it helps..

Mark where are you from? I would honestly like to see your car. Not doubting it but badass honestly. Cavy I've seen that while searching but since 99 was the odd ball I wasn't really sure. The pic does help though.

Could some one clear up the confusion about the 99 sender unit though? As like I said I can get a newer plactic tank to replace my rusted piece of crap. Which would also come with the pump. That would save some cash on the sending unit. Though I would still switch the pump. I would check my wiring myself on the sender unit but mine has been shot for awhile. So not really any use too.

Yea i seen that in a search the other night md. I could do that also. But I was thinking plastic tank good for the winter up here. Along with it needs the new tank. Then the fact I would be getting the sending unit also. Which would save like $120. The gas tank I am looking at is from a 04 if that matters. Though doubtful since they are all suppose to be the same above 00.

Md I seen in the racetronix thread that on of the sponsors I believe it was is running pj's plastic tank. From what I got from the little he said is that it works fine. Though not sure if it is in a 99 or what he meant really. I pm'd him but no luck on a reply.
