I was looking at getting another cavalier but i was wondering what engine out of an ecotec and 2.4L can get me the best results without turboing or supercharging it?
N/A the 2.4 will get you done...
both motors are very comparable, but there are more N/A 2.4s making decent whp than N/A Ecos...
and don't beleive the "myth" of aftermarket support... i just did a full N/A 2.4 build... i found all my parts very easily... and had several options for virtually everything...
oh @!#$, another thread that will turn into a bitchfest.
both are good options and similar motors. however, the eco has a little less displacement, and a little less power. meanwhile, the 2.4 is a little more prone to catastrophic failure if you don't keep up on the maintenance. the choice is yours, basically.
Check out my build thread!
2.4 is definitely the better motor n/a as it stands right now.
but wait a bit, it could go the other way any day now.
180hp in 1989 or 145hp in 2002, you decide. >
Ecotec hands down. It 5-10 less whp in stock form, but ALOT of potential. One of the LD9's weakest link is the oilling for the bottom end, there is a fix but it requires costly machine work and time to hunt down 2.3L parts.

What about a second gen z24 with the 3.1L i was told that has tons of potential too. what do you think?
I vote for the 2.4 cuz im a nut swinger. But they both have good potential none the less. In my opinion a H.O. quad swap will be your best bet.
kyle kyle kyle.... 2.3 oil pump swap.... sleeving an eco.... i think they balance out in price and labor when its all said and done... also at the current time 2.3 parts are not hard to find... a lot of the bigger ones can still be ordered from GM (Camshafts and such)..
now ... to the originial poster... the 3.1 V6 makes less horsepower than either motor stock... and its follower the 3100 is garbage... however... the 3400 swap is an epicly nice swap, or if you do a little more work you could go with a 3800 swap... personally if i had to do a v6, the 3400 would be the way to go... look up "60 degree v6" if you want to do more research

Kyle, Kyle, Kyle, stock sleeves are fine on a N/A eco, the LD9 oil system on the other hand isnt.
is your use of commas supposed to intimidate me??? haha
anyway how far can you bore the slock sleeves?
swap in a dsm engine. they seem to be all the rage these days
Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!

Does it?

As far as you want, but not sure how long it will last. It might last longer than a high reving LD9 with the stock oil system or it might not.

Should it?

this problem could be solved by getting any 2.3 quad motor besides the 95... since the O.P. needs a motor to swap in for his 2200

I think bigfoot is blurry,
that's the problem. It's not the photographer's fault. Bigfoot is blurry. And that's extra
scary to me. There's a large, out-of-focus monster, roaming the countryside.

Then you run into legality issues with putting an OBD1 engine into a OBD2 car.

And what would you be doing Captain Obvious?
Im upset that my car's current trim doesnt make 250whp? @!#$ i didnt know that.
well i like my ecotec. love is a strong word for a piece of metal. if i had the choice i would pick ecotec over a 2.4l. 2.4l may be stronger but i think ecotec's are made better. that is just a guess though.
guessing eh...
so what is your frame of reference for this guess???... its been proven that if an LD9 is maintained, it'll last 300,000 + miles... it also has a cast iron block which is less susceptible to a rod going through it... ok the stock oiling sucks... i'll give the eco that win..

2.0L ecotec = less susceptible to breaking a rod. I've seen a cast iron block that was braced to hell(~600hp Ford 351 in a late model dirt track car) that was basically shattered. I've seen an aluminum connecting rod(350 chevy) that snapped and took out the cylinder wall and turns 2 cylinders into one. Point? Doesnt matter what the block is made of if a rod wants to be external, it is going to be.
