Question about cams and idle
Tuesday, June 08, 2010 7:18 PM
Ok so I got the Z running and it has a somewhat lopey idle for the cams I put in. Im certainly not complaining but not sure if it should be idling like this. The cam specs are Intake lift .340 w/ duration 210 at .50 Exhaust lift .350 w/ 210 duration at .50. would the longer duration even with the lower lift cause this or could i be off a link on the timing chain? when i hit the throttle it revs with no hesitation and no backfiring. Just want to make sure. ill post a vid soon.

the thing to ask is how much overlap to they have?

180hp in 1989 or 145hp in 2002, you decide. >

That I do not know, they are stock 87-88 quad 4 cams. I liked the idea of high duration low lift for a good midrange. I never considered overlap. If i remeber right the first version of the quad was known for a rough running engine, maybe this is what they meant.

It idles rough around 800 rpm but is smooth at 1000. Id think if it was of a tooth it would continue to run crappy but im still leary since I wasnt expecting any kind of rough idle.

Haha that's the plan...if it moves quick I know I did the timing right. Just waiting on a buddy of mine to come over and weld the exhaust sometime this week.

How does your engine run compared to an engine with HO cams? I know mine had a fair bit of lope at idle with HOs, and would rock back ant forth at idle with the .430/222*s in it.

^^ I seem to recall getting a phone call from DTP about having an issue timing a 2.4. This was some years ago and for some reason I want to say it was your car.

Here is a vid of it idling, its shaking a bit although its hard to tell because my hands were shaking too. tried to show the door shaking in the vid too. You can kinda see it in the plug wires. its idiling at about 900rpm, it smooths out by 1000 and really shakes at 800. now that im pretty well convinced its the cams i love it.

From what I can hear/see in the video, I dont really see anything that would worry me. However, videos are not the same as in person.

I would normally agree if the whole car didn't shake lol

Sounds exactly like mine did when I swapped in my secret cams. The timing chain was a little stretched and it wouldnt let me line up my exhaust cam perfectly. I needed to drive the car so I stuck it all together and ordered a chain. I had to up the idle with hpt to 1000 to make it bearable but still had a bit of a pop. I drove the car for a month or better. This week when I put my OS crank pulley on it I tore it down and put the new chain in and everything lined up perfectly. Car is idling and running way smoother and thats just one tooth retarded on the exhaust cam.

Yes sir you are correct. That was my car we were messing with for a whole weekend. When I did the motor swap it was off a tooth, i would drive it but once it got under 1500 rpm then it would cut off. I had to keep reving it in traffic at the lights. Man did that suck, I bet people thought I was a ricer trying to show off LMAO.

And now that said cams are in my engine, its very lopey... but it levels out once it gets above 1500 rpm...

as soon as i get the exhaust done (which i now have 100% planned... just now need parts), i wanna see how it does since there will not be any sort of exhaust rattle with the new header/cat/resinator/muffler/2.5" pipe combo

Well its seems my rough idle might be an arching plug wire, which is now donefor. New set is on the way.

Clicky

there it is...Since then ive raised my idle to 900 rpm and its almost a normal idle

well in my opinion adjust the idle where it idles well, if thats 1000 or 1100 then thats it, my 220 dura idled at 1200 and it sounded good, so do what you want
