LN2 Compression Test #s
Tuesday, June 01, 2010 12:23 PM
First off, I was excited with the results of the compression test I did over the weekend, so I wanted to share. Considering the hell that my head has gone through, I was expecting it to be warped. It saw boost for almost 10k miles, was mated to a block I blew to pieces, when I got it, the valvetrain was a horrendous site to see.. but the specific area for my initial concern, was that it's been over heated numerous times between me & it's previous owner.

I did the comp check cause im trouble shooting a slight over-heating issue and wanted to cancel out the cause being a bad head gasket/warped head.

I don't think I could have gotten a more even spread of numbers on a brand new engine

1= 180
2= 175
3= 180
4= 180

Just out of curiosity, anyone have the actual number range for good compression for the 2200 LN2? I heard 150-180 was recomended, not so sure how accurate that is.

We're only 9:1, and she has an aftermarket cam. Doesn't seem bad to me, but I can't even remember when the last time I did a compression test on a good LN2 was, much less the numbers...

Understatement. Especially considering who the owner was.

what, are you guys afraid to name names?

it had 4 dislodged pushrods which screwed up the rockers that were in there.
I never opened the valve cover to look, jess told me after she found it. Could have fixed it by just swapping back to stock rockers methinks, but I didn't do it.

Wanna know why I didn't care? Cuz I knew I was swapping to an ecotec in 3 weeks.

Don't use that blasphemous term in an LN2 thread.

Get it going again! What are the plans for it now Jess?

Just amazing to see what you've gone through with/for the Eco (research and whatnot), but one problem with the 2200 and it's the worst engine ever created. Something caused those dislodged pushrods, and it could have been prevented with...a little research

ONE problem??

You weren't laying in the street under the car with me the countless times I had issues with that engine.. with the skwirl AND my 98 sunfire.

Times for me now are a lot different than they were then.. so don't you dare make it out like I didn't attempt to work with it.

No dirtying up this thread with bashing Eco vs 2200 crap please. I appreciate anything that has a crankshaft and goes vroom, so lets move on.

Mike... Just have been using it as a daily along side my SS, trying to sell the SS. Eco swap is actually in the future for the car, will be good for what I'm looking to get out of it and I wanna try something new.

Body is in the process of an overhaul. Lots of @!#$ over the next year for the J (sooner the SS sells, sooner updates will start coming)... just wanna enjoy the car again, it sat stuffed away for two years while I wasted money/time on the SS :p

lol, no, I just wasn't making that the point of the comment, was just stating that the head has been through a lot of random @!#$ but at least it still holds compression, lol

And yes the 4 pushrods were dislodged, creating their own new seat on the rocker, and while doing so, jamming the oil ports on the pushrod full of rocker debris, thus preventing oil from lubricating efficiently.

Only real issue I ever had with a Double-deuce was the timing chain... and maybe the lifters collapsing (The crank-swap was something else entirely). But then, the former was expected given the number of miles on the Sonoma. The S-10, well... I still think it's ironic that the shop that installed the reman'd engine went under when I tried to call them after the chain-set failed.

Go beyond the "bolt-on".
