Does anyone know if all ecotec blocks across the models and years have the same water passage sizes and locations? Are the water passages on any given models bigger than the others?
Another question is besides the cylinder bore diameter, what would be the difference between a 2002-2005 L61 head gasket and a 2005-2007 LSJ head gasket or a 2006-2008 LE5 head gasket? As long as the bore is correct, the are the same with respect to fluid passages right?
I know a few people are running LSJ heads on the L61 block with a LSJ head gasket.
If you look at a photo of both head gaskets, there are slight variances in some of the ports. And between the LSJ and L61 IIRC there is one port that is missing.
Crateenginedepot.com has pictures of both head gaskets for referance.
I'm not sure if this is a big deal or not, since some guys are running them with success it would seem.
I know that wasn't much help, but I figured I'd add what I could.
LSJ is .027" thick from the factory
L61 is .040" thick from the factory
Many use the LSJ on their 2.2L (L61) to boost the C/R a bit
2.0L (Factory Turbo) LNF engine is NOT interchangable, as the oil and or coolant passages are different.
Not sure about the 2.4L Ecotec off hand.

Thanks for the info! I'm most interested in the LE5 and L61 interchangeability. I wonder if the LNF is different because of the turbo or because of the VVT. I hope because of the turbo.
Aaron - if i send you a close up, high res pic of a stock LE5 head gasket, could you look at it and compare it to an L61 gasket? or better yet send me a high res pic of an L61 HG?
The LNF head and head gasket are different because of the VVT. You can use a LE5 gasket with the L61. I used a LE5 gasket on my l61 by accident.
LSJ and L61 head gaskets will interchange. I'm using an LSJ gasket on my engine.
