Anything worth doing is worth doing right... Brodycog's LD9 Build.

Well guys at the request of Jay (brodycog) I'm starting up a build thread for his engine... My dad and I are doing the engine build and assembly for him. Ultimately its going to be N/A but he does want to spray the hell out of it down the road. Jay has proven to be quite resourceful at the parts finding and has ordered/bought pretty much everything for the build already. He and I have put a lot of thought into this engine.

The plan for this engine from day one was to be aptly named "The Karo Killer" 260whp+ and 12's ALL MOTOR is the first goal. 300+whp and 11's with nitrous later on.

First off ever since I heard of stock 2.3 pistons in an LD9 block I wanted to throw some huge-o-mungo slugs into one (2.3 pistons are .080 larger than 2.4's). So, I convinced Jay to try it out, he wants to run nitrous and lots of it so he decided to scale back a tad and instead, go .060 over. So, since i already had his block we decided it'd be best to have it sonic tested for wall thickness just to be safe. This block ended up having less 'meat' than we and the machine shop figured would be safe at only around .100. So, Jay brought me another block and we tested it as well, it ended up having much more 'meat' so that one was 'the one'. I believe after the .060 boring it was still at over .100 thickness left.

Plans for a head are yet un-decided. He bought my JMTS flow bench ported 99+ head and sivalves.com 1mm oversized valves to start with but thinks he may want to run an 086 instead. He has been trying to figure out using some different stiffer valve springs and has a set of comp cams .450/.240 cams in mind.

Plans for a custom sheet metal intake manifold made by OEM with a 75mm throttle body are in the works. And he wants to pick up one of the new Seibenick racing long tube headers for it.

Build list already acquired (im sure im forgetting something):

-Block bored and honed to .060, cleaned and decked.
-Wiseco .060 over sharp domed pistons.
-Eagle rods.
-ARP head and main studs
-Cometic MLS head gasket - .052
-2.3 oil pump swap items (new style pick-up relocation block), melling oil pump
-Clevite 77 main and rod bearings
-Gutted and balanced crankshaft by Ray Nissen Machine (I believe it is around 10 pounds lighter than stock)
-Ray Nissen Machine main cap re-enforcement braces.
-2.3 intake and exhaust cam towers with new 35mm lifters (wont be running power steering)
-TTR upper mount
-RK Sport lower mount
-Prothane trans mounts

Now, I just have pictures of the pistons so far but I'll snap some of all the rest soon.

These pistons are pretty much the cats ass... .060 over, have a HELLA dome on them, coated skirts and already balanced to within 2 grams of each other straight from wiseco. IMO wiseco has really stepped up their game. these pistons are VERY nice, much nicer than ive previously seen out of them. Jay ordered these DIRECTLY from wiseco. the reports of not being able to get higher compression pistons from wiseco have been greatly exaggerated. why? the proof is in the pudding... on the left we have paul tjepkes' .020 over wiseco piston from one of his first builds, on the right, jays.....

the karo killer....lmao i hope after reading that, this build dont dissapoint. thanks brad for posting these pics for me. sometime when i dont feel so lazy today i will post up a few of the parts i have laying around here.

2 things,

Your loosing alot of meat on the ring land with those new pistons, especially if he wants to spray the crap out of it.

And you may want to take down the pic of his address.

the ring land is actually thicker by 1/2 'ring' than pauls so i dont understand where your getting that its thin? that and its probably 1/4" thicker than stock. so... ???

stock handles 75 shots just fine, karo's pistons handled 125 just fine. countless other people on here with forged pistons similar to these have been fine with spray.

you'd be surprised at just how much abuse these forged ring lands can take. as long as the AFR is good they will be fine with a 150 shot.

I'm talking about where the valve relief cuts the thickness in half

agreed that its weaker there but its still pretty beefy there. jay told wiseco he wanted to run lots of nitrous, i dont think they would sell him something that was un-capable of handling said nitrous pressures.

(ps, fixed the pic)

dear god people its not the end of the world, if someone cares you can get anybodies address.

but since you guys are so concerned with jay's safety, i took the god damn thing down. so calm it.

ok i ordered special grind cams from comp cams. 240@ 50 .440 lift. I aalreaddy paid for them so hopefully theyll be at my door within the next week or so. also have an inovative wideband, .083 head and ho intake. still thinking about what springs to use and if i will have any issues with clearance. if so its nothing a thicker headgasket wont fix. im sure there are a lot of other things i just cant think of at the moment. but eventually ill have it all together and kicking ass.

holy god.. 240*/.440. thats a pretty nasty cam.

yep, sure is. i just hope you actually get them, jay. if so you are my hero LOL

little update on my end...

got his old rods/pistons separated and noticed that the rod on the cylinder that had the valve drop had some scoring issues (jeas i wonder why? couldnt be the fact that the valve blew THROUGH the piston could it? LOL). it might be ok to run but i sure wouldn't. it could have micro-fractures and anyways, why risk a $3000+ dollar engine when one new rod is $85 bucks? (on a side note, if anybody has just one LD9 eagle rod lying around please post up)

taking the rods and pistons to a race machine shop local to me when the 4th rod is acquired. they are going to balance them to within one gram of each other.

180hp in 1989 or 145hp in 2002, you decide. >

Sexy Pistons, whats the CR on them, Paul was running 10.5:1 iirc so I am guessing 11.5:1 or 12:1. Wouldn't the head choice determine the piston CR and valve clearance?

^^ yes it would but pauls pistons really arent that much different than these. well, you can see in the pics. id say there's about a .5 difference in compression ratio from the piston difference.

I'm confused. In the spec sheet for the pistons, it says "Dome Volume = 0"... To me, that means equivalent to flat top as far as static compression ratio is concerned. Did Wiseco quote you a SCR when you ordered them? Also, you may want to check the clearance with that dome with the Quad4 head if you choose to go that route (and I'm referring to more than just valve clearance).

ordered a single eagle rod today. was really hoping all the others were good.

orderd oil pan gasket and valve cover or tower gaskets last night. with next paycheck will be ordering the rest of my lifters and the rest of the gaskets i need unless brad tells me my other gaskets are still good.

welp, finally went and picked up jay's crank from the machinist. very nice piece. still standard amazingly so plenty of room for error (god i hope not ).

also, jay purchased brandon blaga's crane cams .430 / .222 cams with lightweight lifters and cam towers. should make for some vear nice bump sticks in this build.

I'd hope you figured it out already, but look at the 2nd to last pic of the original post. It's not hard to make it out.

its an old concept. time for something new to take the reigns. - Z yaaaa

tinkles ill be fine im not too concerend about anyone coming to see me. If you wanna come see me your welcome you can have a beer. now on the other hand all i can say is wow look at my pretty crank.

bras how much does this crank weigh?

Re: Anything worth doing is worth doing right... Brodycog's LD9 Build.

we didnt weigh this exact one but one ray had done already that was exactly like it, it was 36.5 lbs with the crank gear.

its weird though...i dont see how yours is lighter than mine, mine was also knife edged so it actually had more removed. i need to weigh it...
