Noob question?
Sunday, May 02, 2010 3:23 PM
Well correct me if am wrong ( and am sure you will with quick aggression) but i read something about the ld9 twin cams powerband is in between the mid-range and high powerband....and i kinda wanna know the best shift point, because i would normally shift somewere between 2k and 4k ranges cause i believed that these cars made low-end power and it would be pointless to rev past 4 or above cause theres no power there so again hit me up because am dieing to know

Peak power is around 5500 RPM on a stock LD9.

um....right before redline? That's what I usually do at the strip.

I think what he's talking about is the "sweet spot" Like technically, an LN2 makes the most HP at 5200RPM, but most of it's torque is in the midrange, between 3500 and about 4500. Torque is what you want here, not horsepower. You'd have to look at an LD9 dyno graph to be able to tell, and also use your "butt dyno"

Shift just before you hit the limiter. It is very rare these days to see a relatively stock car that would benefit from shifting any higher or lower than that.

If you look at a dyno graph, and know how many RPM you drop in each shift, you can figure out where the absolute optimal shift point is, but most time, a stock tach will be too inaccurate to hit it dead-on every time anyway. You want to shift at the point behind the peak of the curve where you're just about to make less hp than the point on the graph you're going to drop to before the curve, if that makes any sense.

lol ur right... no point to strech out grears when u could get more speed w the next gear... for me its from 2-3 gear.. im not sure where to shift at ... i usually go to red but reality is...my z24s stock as f**K. dyno will be the ultimate... i just shift so my rpms never drop past 4. know your shift speed... the driver matters!!!!!!!!!!

Very True..the only thing i done to my car is a Aem cai /w heat wrap and a custom dual exhaust..i want a and exhaust mani and its a bit more torquey but other than that ill be getting a hp tune pretty soon then ill really see what my butt can tell me then lol

This is exactly correct. Most people don't get this, haha.

Here are some helpful links if you actually want to learn more about optimal shift points.
